JUPITERS in COMPETITION

Post by Leo Bolter »

Neil Moore had driven his Jupiter down from Auckland to compete in the 25th MG Classic Motor Race Meeting at the Manfeild Park Motor Racing circuit this weekend. He stayed with Val and I, so I went along with him yesterday (Saturday 13 November) as honoury "pit crew". I even got to park the Princess in the pit area! The marshals at the entrance must have recognised the "quality old British machinery" :D

During the races he was competing in the commentators gave a pretty accurate potted history of Jowetts and the Jupiter in particular. We'd primed them with a bit of hard copy info.* beforehand, but there definitely were things included in what they said, that they must have had prior knowledge of . . .

* including the top priority stop press news of a Jupiter being judged as the best car in the "land of Eng" :D

Here's a image of him returning to the pit area after a good showing on the circuit.

I'm embarrassed !!!

Post by Leo Bolter »

Hi all,

When sorting out and digitising our old photos so I can send my kids backups to store for the family, I came to a problem (our treasured images are in the traditional shoe boxes stored in a huge trunk at the moment). There are plenty in the boxes without any clues written on the reverse unfortunately, so challenging our rapidly failing memories . . .

Anyway, I came across a envelope containing several photos of Jowetts in competition. Whilst there is text on the back of these photos which explain "where", I have lost the memory of "who" . . . who sent me the photos . . . and when. The text on the one below reads " Myself - practice for a race at Ingliston - last competitive event before work started on rebuild."

If you recognise yourself (or someone else) please let me know . . . and please forgive my sin! :)

Cheers.
Leo.

Leo, I am going to have a stab at guessing that this is Pete Crosby racing at Ingliston Circuit, near Edinburgh Airport in 1976. Ingliston is only two miles from our house. I recognised the circuit before I read the text.

Thanks for you reply, Drummond.

In the absence of any other replies and with your intimate knowledge of the circuit I think I'll pencil in Pete Crosby as being the driver of that car and 1976 as the date . . .

Thanks very much mate.

Leo.

I was at that race meeting. With three broken ribs and recovering from a punctured lung. Eddie Hawthorne had also entered in the Historic race and we were both preparing the car. Unfortunately one week prior to the meeting we had a bad accident in the Jupiter when we were out testing it. We skidded into a field and I was thrown out and the Jupiter rolled over me. The ground was very soft and I was pushed into the mud. I had a crash helmet on and that saved me. I least I was taken to see the race. The Jupiter is still not back on the road. The picture certainly brought back memories Leo.

So there you are mate.
