Woodruff key.

Post by TedAllen »

Hi, Can anybody help me out with the 'Woodruffe key' that locks the Javelin rear brake drum to the halfshaft please. Mine has dropped out whilst I was sorting out the n/s brake and I can't for the life of me find it.
I can make one if neccesary but an original would be good. Strange thing is, I have a spare drum which may have one in but I can't find that either !

Hi Ted,

I would expect someone will send you a key quickly, but anyway -

I noticed some woodruff keys on Ebay, but they were for the Javelin oil pump. Don't know whether they are the same size as you require but the Ebay number is:-

Item number: 230300441431

Regards,

Tony.

Thanks for the thought Tony.
The wheel key is about 10 times the size of the oil pump one.
Dimensions are Square steel bar 6.5mm X 6.5mm X 25mm.
B&Q do a similar steel bar but it is 7mm square so the options there for a bit of vigorous filing !

Hello again Ted.

Thought as much, but it was interesting to see that they were made from, and I copy the quote -

made from key-steel BS 970: 080M30 .

How does the B & Q steel match up to these specs, and does it matter?

Tony.

Yes it matters. The key can take a large shear particularly if the taper has grease on it or is not tight. Remember remove all oil from taper and bore before fitting.

Yes, you most certainly do want to use the right steel. I note the oil pump keys mentioned are made from BS970 080M30. I would have thought that for a highly stressed key such as for the rear hub 080M40 would be more suitable, as per the tables from www.roymech.co.uk (a very useful resource).
