I am now told that this system is used by some 'modern' cars and that TWO idler gears (one on each 'side' to balance wear?) are used between crankshaft and camshaft gears, to make the camshaft rotation the same as the crankshaft.
Any comments?

I have had a response from Vic Morrison in New Zealand - they were all like that pre-1930.
Another of Steven Poole's improvements I guess.
The camshafts were in the opposite sequence of course.
That second small gear behind the big one does what?

That drives the dynamo/distributor via a fabric coupling.

I was surprised that setting up the crankshaft to the camshaft seemed to be much easier on the vintage engine compared to when the chain was introduced.
There are 3 position options on the camshaft gear of my 1933 and 1934 7hps, (I believe 1/3 of a tooth difference), as well as a couple of options on the key for the crankshaft sprocket.
As my friend Ian Howell always says, "Any comments".
Tony.

That's right, Tony, 6 different options. I didn't realise you only have the one correct position on the vintage, but given the gear drive I suppose that is the case. Don't know if that's a good thing or not. I suppose on the vintage it doesn't enable you to compensate for any machining inaccuracies in the cam or crank, assuming there might have been.

There is some adjustment because the keys which drive the gears are round pins, with off-set parallel bit to fit the keyway. So you can spin it round 180 deg and alter the timing.

Thanks for that James. So a bit like the key on the crankshaft of the '30s ones in that case. Any update on your son's vintage?

Yes, the chassis is now on its wheels. We are doing a dry build first to get engine position determined, radiator and cross member moved back, holes drilled then scrat and paint later. Hardy spicer propshaft is ordered. Discussions underway whether to do a standard sports or a Joe Hepworth.

What is the chain-driven monster next to the Jowett chassis?
