Hello
I hope your holiday was good and sunny.
My Jowett made very progress. you can see it on the new pictures.
Is it a problem to find a good flat spring? My in the front right is broken.
I use two new hydraulic engine mounting, too?
Is that purchasable?
Thank you

Here a few pictures:

Hi Marcel - Looks like you are making very good progress - please put a picture of the broken spring and it's measurements - plus a picture of the engine mountings - I shall be seeing our members who run the parts department in a few weeks at a committee meeting - I will take the images with me and see what stock is held.

By "flat spring" I assume you mean the leaf springs - if so even if these aren't available they are fairly easy to make by any skilled blacksmith if they have the originals to work from. This may be easier to do from Germany than to source what could be a fairly rare part.

each hydraulic engine mounting contains a small coil spring and breakage is not uncommon. I don't know if these are available from the club spares - if not it may be possible toc ut down a valve spring ( non Jowett) of similer diameter ( (although I have never done this or seen it done.) Apart from the spring breakage the hydraulic mountings are troublefree but do require regular topping up with oil.

Its not just a matter of a blacksmith cutting a peice of metal to size - leaf springs have to hardened & tempered - it could be that Marcel could find a road spring company over in Germany to make one up for him if he has a pattern - if not I know a few places in this country that can help him.

That was the "skilled" bit - getting the same amount of spring and making sure it is reliable and properly treated is the skill - any old blacksmith can make a piece of metal that looks the same :) I've seen them made on TV and it didn't look that tough, but one of those skills that probably looks easy because it really isn't :D

Hi Marcel,

Why do these need to be replaced? If you went with these to a specialist, I suspect they would be more than capable of restoring them without too much trouble. I've certainly seen worse condition on perfectly safe cars, from the photos they look ok, or are there cracks or other defects we can't see? Leafsprings are fairly simple technology and tend to sag instead of failing - this can result in a slightly lowered ride height, but not hugely on a multi-leaf spring like this one.

Worth a call to Jowett Car Spares on Monday, see if they have some available, it may be the type of thing they've had for a long time just waiting for a project like yours to get underway!

Failing that, you may well find that only the longest spring needs to be replaced - the shorter springs add reinforcement to stiffen the spring but aren't particularly critical if they are not 100% perfect.

Hello Jack,

okay that is probably a misunderstanding, you have seen in the last photo the good spring, that you see how the spring have to be.

Here a photo of the broken spring.
after i have a good spring i would give all four springs away to a speciallist and he will check and repair all springs.
that is my plan to day.

Marcel,

I have spoken with Ian Priestley who is the Registrar for pre-war Jowetts on your behalf. He is able to supply, from his own very limited stock, two new old stock engine-mount bearer springs (labelled G) in George's photo of the mount in the previous post.

He says that most probably there will be a top spring leaf, that will fit your car, in the Club Spares Department stock.

He does not to my knowledge own a computer and therefore has no email address, so I have told him that I will say to you that you will write a letter to him. Post it to his home address which may be found on the inside cover of the Jowetteer magazine.

Include in the letter your list of anything you may need, with diagrams, photos and measurements if necessary, so that there will be only one postage charge when the parts are returned to you. Ian will let you know the cost of the parts.

I have lost your private message somehow, but I think the words above cover what you need, except - do you have the correct set of spanners for the car - BSF /BSW?

Tony.
