In the picture of the engine bay of CD1 the patch of pale green/blue in front of the bonnet lock looks to be exactly the same as paintwork I found in undisturbed areas inside CD10. I wonder if all the range left the works in this colour originally or is this just a coincidence?

Hi,

As far as I know when George Mitchell owned the pick up he took the chassis to be sandblasted and painted but the company went bankrupt and the chassis was broken up.

I owned the van CD 10 JKU 945 in the mid eighties and have several photos of it when it was dark blue.It was in a very sorry state and I was quite suprised by the size of it, very similar to a Ford Zephyr estate.
Its original colour was a sort of duck egg blue and i did manage to get the registration reinstated.

I have a number of photos from C H Woods of various CDs at the factory which I want to sell and also scrap books etc of various Jowett adverts/articles that i have collected over the years. If anyone is interested contact me

These pictures of the CDs are fantastic. Thanks everybody! What a pity that so much of the pick up was sadly destroyed. So what's left of her- just the tailgate? How sad!
Having said that, I had to let a brand new Javelin scuttle go in the early seventies when a local Jowett agent (in Birkenhead) closed down. Just no room to store it. But I wish I had rescued a whole stack of steering wheels- Bradford/Javelin/ Jupiter. Somebody said we would never need them! :(
But we carried away as much as we could (all for £25!!) in three Javelins- one of which was rescued from the ex- agent. Imagine that sight on an ordinary Saturday, three Javelin loaded to the roofs, one under tow. The towed car (I think it was a 1951 model) was rescued by Peter Yarwood of Helsby, Cheshire who completely rebuilt it including rebuilt engine, later suspension etc. and resprayed it maroon. Last I heard it was up for sale but that was a few years ago.
Keep up the good work. I just love this archive/historic stuff!!

Shame I did not know about the Jowett agent in Birkenhead when I was living there. I think my Jup came from there or was serviced by them. I bought it just across the Mersey in 1968.

Keith. The Birkenhead agents were HO Addis and Son. My dad had his Javelin serviced there from 1959 until 1967 when he had to scrap it. I then followed in his footsteps when I bought my Javelin in 1967 and they serviced my Javelin until they closed down in the early 70s. They replaced my steering box, shock absorbers etc. After Addis's closure I went to Roy Braddock of Marple and then of North Rhode, Cheshire who gave me excellent service and knew EVERYTHING about Jowetts. He was fantastic and such a lovely person him and his wife. Jessie always had a cup of tea and a cake for you when you called. Both sadly missed.

Addis appears in the Jup's original log book; I wish I had the wherewithal to take it there when I was a student in Liverpool. I ended up rebuilding the engine in the flat's front room! At least I learnt where that centre tie bolt was after struggling to split the engine. All I had was a copied diagram of the engine to rebuild it with. Parts were bought from Charlie Moar and George Mitchell. I did not join the JCC for another 4 years or, for that matter, met another Jowett owner. Missed years of camarardarie.

I think I must have got my spare Bradford exhaust valve from this firm in 1963/4 when I rebuilt LLG 125 (Story told in Jowetteer a few years back).

Like Forum Admin, I was a student in Liverpool at the time (Riversdale Tech), and didn't have much (any) money!

I do remember they were very helpful and went to quite a bit of trouble to find the (then) well obsolete part.

Incidentally, I had a very similar experience about 1969/70 with Torquay Motors. I was passing by on holiday and noticed "Jowett" in the signwriting over to shopfront. (I have a photo somewhere if it might be of interest).

They were Jaguar dealers at the time, and I went into the showroom and said "I would like to buy a new Jaguar (salesman VERY interested! ) but I can only afford spares for my Javelin (parked outside), can you help? (Salesman rather crestfallen) .

"Try Parts Dept" he says. The Parts man was excited to see a Javelin and I gave him a ride around town. The upshot was that he GAVE me all remaining stock of 'bits' and I had to leave for another enthusiat to collect, a BRAND NEW complete rear axle.

As an afterthought as I was leaving, the Parts man says "you might like this" and gave me their crisp copy of the parts list. There were pencilled notes on various pages, but against the back axle it said "Order one complete unit. Won't need it for ages"

How right they were!

CD Bradfords and George Mitchell

Post by paul wilks »

Incidentally, having visited George Mitchell's in Scotland with my dad in the mid 60s, I wonder what happened to all those Javelin and Jupiters. I remember especially a Javelin George had rebuilt with CD brake drums and 6.40 x 15â€

Hi there,

On the subject of Torquay Motors, I remember going there in about 1966 ( my mother-in-law had a guesthouse in Torquay) and seeing the, well-thumbed, Javelin Parts Book on the Spares Dept. counter. They were very helpful and still had lots of stock. I had a black Javelin at the time, VMG177. I sold this car to someone in Devizes in around 1970, but thats another story.

Another absolute treasure trove was Charlie Dodd's place in Dartford, Kent. Again around 1966/7, I recall calling in there to buy a Jowett stationary engine, which I still have. Charlie had a pile of about 25 of these ex-government engines all in standard government green paint and said 'Take your pick'! I remember he was asking £10 each. He had a couple of old Nissen Huts on his site, and each was piled high with Jowett spares. In one hut, the roof was sagging, and he had built a neat pillar to hold the roof up, from new, boxed, sets of Jowett pistons! From floor to roof! On the track down to his Nissen Huts, which lay in a valley, you walked past a new Jupiter chassis, just lying there beside the trackway. Whatever happened to all that stuff? There must have been tons and tons of Jowett spares, mostly all new and boxed. I wonder if it's all still there....

All the best for 2007.

David

I also went to Charlie Dodd's place on one occasion.

I arrived to find he had just had a visit from vandals who had scattered sets of bearing shells all over the floor and he was trying to match them up again.

I spent a couple of hours helping to tidy up - he was that sort of bloke, one you wanted to help.
