Re: CC oil filter
the CC filter is definately vokes and is if I remember rightly exactly the same as the one on the Jav. If using an adaaptor to use a modern throw away filter the jav one should do as on both Bradford & Javelin the filter lies flat i.e parallel with the ground whereas many such adaaptors cater for filtesr that in effect dangle vertically. The HA/HB viva filter housing is exactly the same diameter as the vokes but shorter and I think the chevette had the same. May be available in scrapyards or autojumbles and the elements are on ebay for around £5.

Re: CC oil filter
Andrew.
I have modified both the Javelin & the Jupiter engines to use the modern spin on/off filters to good effect. I currently use one similar to that used on the two litre Peugeot / Citreon diesel. Been using that for over 12 years now with positive results. Much better filtration, more cost effective and easier to replace. I make all the bits myself. I chose filters woth a 20mm thread to allow a 12mm hole up the middle and still have plenty strength. I have drawings in the workshop. I can get a filter number in the morning if you wish.
Like George I recon you have the volkes unit.

Re: CC oil filter
Thanks again George,
I would go down the chevette route but I'm up in Scotland, and with the amount of salt they put on the roads, I haven't seen a chevette or a viva up here for about 20 years !
- Drummond,
I'll take any help you can give including filter numbers ! do you start with a piece of 20 mm threaded bar, and drill out a 12 mm hole ?
I would have a go at making one myself as I have a small lathe, if I had a copy of a plan or drawing.
Thanks
Andrew

Re: CC oil filter
My adaptor has an adaptor that screws into the casting on the back of the timing case, and then there is a brass fitting which screws into that and holds the filter housing. The filter then screws onto the brass threaded section that protrudes from that.

Re: CC oil filter
Andrew, first, your original filter is correct and unmodified. I have just handled the exact same item from a dismantled CC engine.
According to the parts book the external oil filter (full flow) - only fitted to the CC - should comprise:
1 off 50872 Oil filter housing
1 off 50873 Oil filter element
1 off 50874 Oil filter spring
1 off 50875 Oil filter seal
1 off 7763 Oil filter bolt
1 off 7761 Oil filter base
1 off 7762 Oil filter gasket
Every canister that I have seen has always been green.
I do not have opportunity this evening to delve further, but can tell you that JCS supplies a good number of the same filter that you have been supplied with, to Bradford owners with no come-back
What I suspect is that when first fitting one of the more modern filter elements you need first to cannibalize the bottom plate off the original filter to support the new replacement, but if you can bear with me for a few days I will provide a definitive answer once I have done a small amount of dismantling!

Re: CC oil filter
Thanks Paul,
I had sort of came to that conclusion and have already cut up the old filter ! I need to make an insert now to fit on the base of the old filter base to centralise the new filter element and hold it in place. I'll attach a photo. So far I have just removed the outer bevel of the old filter base so it can seal on the new filter.

Re: CC oil filter
Hi Andrew,
The Bradford oil filters we use in NZ are a Ryco filter part No TRZ0039. (5 1/2in long x 3in) You will need a thin metal adaptor plate for the filter element to sit on at the closed end of the filter housing.
A small spring sits over the centre bolt between the bottom of the housing and the filter plate to seal the plate against the filter element.
From memory this plate is the same one that is used in the Morris Minor 1000 oil filter housing. I think the filter element originates from the BMC / Nuffield commercial range. The JCC of NZ has stocks of filters, and possibilly the adaptor plate, but I will need to check.
Alternatively one of our members has cast new filter heads to take a modern spin on filter.
Will try to send photos latter
Hope this helps.

Re: CC oil filter
Thanks John,
I actually have a Nuffield 4/25 and was looking at its filter set up with its 'pressure plate', and I reckon you are spot on.
They still make the nuffield in Turkey so spares are a plenty. I might look into getting one from the nuffield spares man.
The filter however is quite a bit shorter but getting filters is no problem, just getting them to fit seems to be the tricky bit !

Re: CC oil filter
Just ordered an oil filter pressure plate for a morris minor 1000.
Will report if suitable once it arrives.
I always fancied a morris minor, now I will have a tiny bit of one !

Re: CC oil filter
I now have all of the parts and a JCS filter. I am concerned that the JCS filter is a bit shorter than the original and am not sure if the preload spring will do the job. Neither do I know if the top end of the filter needs some sort of guide to locate properly.
I will be investigating further tomorrow night. I have suggested to JCS that an adaptor kit be produced, once we know what is needed.
I am trying to contact a user of the new filter to find out how they did it, but they are on Holiday at the mo.

Re: CC oil filter
My plan was to pack the spring a little - its about 4mm too short.
I still intend using the cut down old filter as a guide for the new one with the pressure plate sandwiched between the two. This might be sufficient for the packing.
I also thought about a guide for the top end of the filter, but as long as the pressure of the oil inside is uniform, it should self centre as it applies strain to the spring.
The morris minor and many others using this type of filter don't have a top end guide as far as I can see. That said most installations are vertical which may help.
It may be possible to use another pressure plate with a ring of holes around the central bolt hole to locate the top end ? I'll look into this when the pressure plate arrives.

Re: CC oil filter
Well the pressure plate arrived and its in !
I packed the spring as mentioned earlier and it seems to fit ok. Whether its correctly lined up at the front or not who knows !
I suppose as long as I get oil pressure it must be working ok. I should be starting it up again in a week or so, so we will see how it goes.

Re: CC oil filter
I forgot to mention I didn't use any of the old filter as it would of meant drilling out the hole in the pressure plate. I'll maybe do that at the next oil change depending on how this one goes.

Re: CC oil filter
Hello every Bradford CC owners.
Flexolite (sales@flexolite.co.uk) + (www.flexolite.co.uk) has made an adaptor kit for my Bradford CC 1951.
This allows you to use modern filters.
They are just mailing it to me - let's see how it fits.
Perhaps the same adaptor will fit older engines too ?
The price was reasonable, and I told them to contact the club to ask members, if they wanted one too. Has anything happened ?

Re: CC oil filter
I have tried this filter adaptor on my Javelin, but it doesn't work. On the earlier Javelins (with the green Vokes Filter) the oil goes into the centre of the filter and returns along the outside. The screw on Fram filter that I have has a rubber flap behind the small holes around the outside, and I understand that the flap is there to prevent the filter can from draining back when the engine is off. Mine semed to work OK at first, but then while I was adjusting the ingnition and carburretors I saw that the oil pressure gauge showed zero. I checked the line to the gauge and it was empty. I checked the oil pressure relief valve and that was ok. I turned the engine by hand and the pump was working. With no filter in place I turned the engine by hand, and no oil came out of the fitting at the back of the timing case, but oil came out of the centre of the filter casting. I discussed this with Neil Moore inNew Zealand and he is adamant that all screw on oil filters are like the one that I have.
If your Javelin has a brown Tecalemit filter, than the adaptor will work because the oil goes in the outside and out of the centre.
The Jowett workshop manuals have drawings that show which way the oil distribution system works, so for your Bradford you should study that carefully.
