Re: Is this a Javelin steering wheel?
I pulled my wheel out to examine, it’s definitely beyond a DIY repair and would need recasting.
If anyone has a better wheel I would be interested (I don’t mind if its cracked and needs some love but not totally destroyed like mine!)

Re: Is this a Javelin steering wheel?
Thanks Keith. Alas the gentleman who ran ‘Wheelwrights’ in Morecambe has passed away however I have had good reports about a Kent based firm called steering wheel restorations. I could try and DIY but the rim is very badly cracked with pieces missing.

Re: Is this a Javelin steering wheel?
Cheers that’s really helpful. Mine is the keyed type (and is the other style) but I suspect via the club is the best way of sourcing a better wheel.

Re: Dismantling a very seized engine
Many thanks for all of the helpful and supportive comments. I think I will just persevere myself, I managed to pick up a secondhand pillar drill yesterday which was helpful. The good thing about the project is that there’s no chance of getting bored, there is work in every direction

Re: Dismantling a very seized engine
Many thanks gents! I have never experienced engine internals so badly corroded however it was clear that the engine had spent a long time in the elements, on dismantling it the sump and the combustion chambers were full of water. I don't think any of the engine internals will be salvageable, perhaps...

Re: Dismantling a very seized engine
This is the camshaft which shows how bad it was. The followers are still seized in the crankcases!

Re: Dismantling a very seized engine
Victory!
Definitely the rustiest engine I have ever dealt with. The crankcases need cleaning properly but, provides the head faces can be cleaned up sufficiently they should be serviceable.

Re: Dismantling a very seized engine
Thanks Chris and David, very helpful. The issue with tipping stuff into the crankcase is that it gradually percolates out into the wheelbarrow beneath (worrying it is managing to escape via the waterjacket which I’m hoping is via the liner seals rather than anything more sinister) so my plan is to b...

Re: Dismantling a very seized engine
Thanks, that’s helpful. I will get a load of Aldi cola tomorrow and fill the crankcase in preparation for more hammering next weekend!
Wish me luck.

Dismantling a very seized engine
Finally thanks to Sam Glover’s kind assistance I now have MUW554 safely ensconced in my garage. Remarkably the bodywork is better than expected, cosmetically dreadful but structurally quite redeemable. I have started however with what I suspect will be the trickiest issue to rectify, the engine. The...

Many thanks Keith, once I have the car in custody I will start a new thread in a more appropriate part of the forum to document my progress.

Re: Javelin free to club member!
Thanks very much for your reply Chris, very interesting to hear some more of the cars back story. I have seen your work and found one of your threads on Retro Rides very informative. I am under no illusion that this car will need a lot of love! Thankfully I am pretty good with the spanners and a fai...
