1929 Long Two brake rod bushes/brake pedal

Post by garthwright »

Most bits on my 'unrestored' 1929 Long Two work fine, except the MOT guys are never very impressed. One item they keep picking up on is the slight play between the shaft on which the brake pedal is fitted and the two chassis mounted brackets. It's not a lot and I've always reckoned a bit of play here in non compensated brakes may be a good thing! But they are at the point of not believing me. Is this a matter of rewelding and boring the brackets - or any advice please ?

Also on one occasion having to brake 'hard' when someone came out in front of me I pressed the foot pedal hard ( as well as pulling on the handbrke !) - stopped in time but the brake pedal bent. It looks in good original condition and bent straight ok - but has anyone met this and tried bracing the pedal in any way ?

Similar thing happened to Wally Dale on the Pirelli Marathon. After leaving scrutineering in centre of London he had to make an emergency stop. When we returned back to my place, the welder was out to strengthen the pedal.
