Left Hand Javelins

I have read somewhere that 412 Javelin's were sold in Canada and 36 in the USA but I cannot find my reference for these numbers. There must have been some sold in Europe as well.

Mine is one of 131 sold by one dealer in Vancouver, Brtish Columbia.

LHD Javelins

Post by Eric Aldcroft »

Eden Lindsay, who is the Javelin registrar reported to me that 433, (presumably LHD) Javelins were imported to Canada. I have no other information; but I expect Eden does.

I am not sure if Eden is a member of this forum, but please be a little patient with him just now. He has had major surgery recently and is recovering at present. I am sure all join me in wishing him well. He hopes to be at Bingley at the end of the month.
He will definitely be able to answer this one!

How many LHD Javelins?

Post by David Morris »

Hi all,

I suspect there must have been more LHD Javelins made than RHD, as the UK was in a serious 'export or die' situation in the early 1950's. I have read somewhere that Jowett's had rations of steel allowed that were proportional to their export figures, which must have focussed their minds primarily on exports.

Overall, the records from Briggs shows that 22,799 Javelin bodies were produced, so the export numbers must have been considerable. This figure may exclude some 400 Javelins that were sent for export as 'knocked down' kits of parts. However, whether the overall total figures for exports were RHD ( for the Commonwealth ) or LHD ( for other countries that drive on the 'wrong' side of the road ) is hard to say, but I expect there are production records somewhere?

All the best,

David

If the body/chassis number data base was put together
See this thread..
http://jowett.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=270
Add to it known numbers/country...better still new threads/section for each model where members can list numbers of cars, engine numbers, and those engine numbers of old blocks discarded, laying around in the back of garages....
Would that help to build a data base, and be able to be cross referenced with any old documents that may still exist?

Well I certainly did not know of one, let alone two, Javelins in Austria. If we had known we may have cut across there to find some spares when the flywheel came of the Blankley Javelin in Slovakia on the 199? Pirelli Marathon.
Know that means another stopover on our planned European tour. I was thinking the Baltic, but we could do Austria, Croatia, Czech and Hungary!

The Javelin Registrar was able to supply shipping dates and destinations for my car and spare engine. I would imagine that he could determine the number of cars shipped to Europe and the Americas. I am assuming that he would be well enough.

Javelins in Austria

Post by Eric Aldcroft »

Earlier this year I sold a Javelin steering wheel to someone in Vienna, and I understood that it was purchased for an actual car. If this was not the car that "BR Andy" referred to , there may be at least two Javelins in Austria.

How many LHD Javelins?

Hi there,

On holiday in Maderia a couple of years ago, incidently while doing a tour of a local winery (!!), we found a photograph showing a LHD Javelin parked in a street in Funchal, the capital.

There have recently been some NOS Javelin spares being sold on eBay from an address in Maderia, so I assume that there may have been a franchised dealer on the island at some time?

All the best,

David
