Javelin Oil Filter adaptor

Post by Robin Fairservice »

I understand that it is possible to get an adaptor so that modern screw on filters could be used on a Javelin. Does any one have any information on this as I cannot get new oil filters out here.

This is where i got mine from in 2004. it cost £36 back then. Someone once told me me that a SAAB 93 Diesel oil filter fits a Jav.

Hi Robin,

I'm assuming that you are talking about the adaptor designed to be used with a modern spin-on filter GFE 173 or PH 2964?

I bought my adaptor kit from the Jupiter Owners Auto Club years ago, but they still stock them or they did in Dec 2007. GBP35 for the adaptor kit, plus GBP3.25 for the filter.

I'm assuming that you have already checked Bill Lock in the UK, and the JCC.

I recall the JCCA having some stock a few years ago - there might still be one left. Get in touch if you need us to check for you.

Cheers,

Hello all.

Harking back to the original post. I get the impression that the search for the adaptor has been bought about by the lack of supply of the filter elements as used in the original design. If that's the case, try the New Zealand Jowett Spares division of the JCC of NZ . . . the paper replacement elements (and a while back, the felt type too) are readily available here in NZ. Look for "Contacts" at the NZ web site for the contact details.

http://www.jowettnz.sytes.net/

Members of the Associated Jowett Car clubs have access to the spares supplies and the freight on parts is usually on a "at cost" basis. (unlike some clubs I know of where it can be at 25% of the value of the parts . . or a set minimum!!).

I hope this is of some help . .

Regards, Leo

Javelin Oil Filter

Post by Robin Fairservice »

I didn't know that the Jupiter group had them, so will follow this up. I haven't had anyreply to me E mail to the Flexolite people yet. I belong to the NZ club and are presently using their filters, but I was perhaps being a bit lazy hoping tha I could have a system where by I could buy a replacement filter off the shelf, just when I wanted one.

Javelin Oil Filter

Post by Robin Fairservice »

I have had a response from Flexolite and they will be making another batch of adaptors in a month or two. In the mean time, after four attempts this morning, I cannot get my filter case to seal, have a pool of oil on the floor and am getting very frustrated. Could some kind soul let me have two or three rubber seals? Mine must be no good and really don't seem to be wide enough for the thin case to seal against.

Thanks.

I, too , have found the rubber seals supplied by the club with its filters to be too thin. I have been using the same, thicker, one for several years.
Is there some difficulty in getting these seals ?
I have visited several hydraulic and other companies around Manchester over the last few years with a sample but am only ever offered seals with a round, rather than a square, section. I bought a number of Unipart filters some years ago and they seem to fit ok but again, the seals are the wrong size. I have about a dozen, but I've tidied them away and can't just find them. I'll let you know the part number when I do.

Unfortunately over this side of Canada they haven't heard of Unipart! We have a 3 day weekend so on Tuesday I will try the main hose and fitting store to see what they have.

Tried my local motor factor who is good with old stuff. I took two old boxes down but he could not find equivalent. Purolator mf84a or Ce176a
Tecalemit fg2471 or GUD G285

I will keep trying.

Found my oil filters today and as luck would have it they are not marked with any reference number. They just come in a poly bag with the rubber seal. Being Unipart, I think they must be for BL cars and I think the early A series engine springs to mind. I think they even used cartridge filters into the 'Mini' years.
Keith, I wonder if your supplier has a supply of Jav/Jup core plugs...I think they're 1&1/4 inch....most of the 'old' suppliers in Manchester have closed and my man hasn't got any. The Asian lads are taking over the shops now and they are too shrewd to stock this kind of slow moving stuff. I am down to one now but Tim Neville is going to let me have a couple. I think it may be important to source these as modern core plugs are quite different.

Javelin Oil Filters

Post by Robin Fairservice »

I couldn't find one, but was directed to a custom gasket maker. They supply to the oil industry and also supplied many of the gaskets for a large water supply sceme for which I recently supervised the construction. The manager turned out to be the son in law of a friend! He cut one for me, and now I have to try it out. They have a minimum order policy of $200! Mine was free.

Javelin Oil Filter adapter and Jowett Engines

Post by David Morris »

Hi there,

I purchased a Flexolite spin-on oil filter converter about 2 years ago and found it excellent.

However, I believe it still needed a rubber sealing gasket which, once you have fitted the converter, never needs to come off again. If you need the rubber rings, why not try Flexolite, as they must have stocks?

On the subject of 1.25" core plugs, John Airey and I saw a box of them at the Wroughton show last weekend. The seller was Cox & Turner Engineering, 32 Camel Green Rd. Alderholt, Fordingbridge, Hants SP6 3AT. Their phone number is 01425-652627. E-mail is www.coxnturner.freeserve.co.uk. I believe they wanted £1 each for the plugs and they had a box of about 10.

By the way, they also have a Javelin engine for sale and what looked like a fairly complete example of a WW2 wartime Jowett two cylinder stationary engine. These are seldom in a complete condition and, from the photo we were shown, it looked almost all there.

I mention this in passing, and have no connection with the seller.

I hope this helps.

All the best,

David
