Javelin Brake bleed screws

Post by Chris Cole »

I have a 1949 Javelin with hydro-mechanical brakes. The front wheel cyliners have 7/16" UNF tappings for the brake hose, but 5/16" BSF tapping for the bleed screws. The bleed screws are mangled! Before I tap them out to 3/8" UNF does anyone know of a place to buy 5/16" BSF bleed screws please?

Having suffered memory loss here is the second half of my question! The 5/16" BSF bleed screw is not pointed but has a flat end with a small female dimple in the middle. This implies it was used with a steel ball as a seal, though no ball was found in the cyliner and the outer edge of the flat end was bottomed in the cyliner casting to act as the seal. Any comments?

Javelin Brake Bleed Screws

Post by Drummond Black »

Chris The later Javelin bleed screw is 3/8 UNF and I have a source of for them in Stainless steel. I will speak to him and find out if they are available in 5/16 BSF.

Regarding the flat end !! Yes it is designed for use with a ball. I stopped using the ball years ago by having the bleed screws made with a pointed end, and always in stainless steel.

Give me a call if you require more info. I have more experience with full hydraulic systems.

Will let you know how I get on with the 5/16 BSF screws.

Drummond, Thanks for the information. Thanks for the tip about using tapered screws in place of a steel ball. It would be great if you can find a supplier of two 5/16" BSF screws; many thanks.

Hi Drummond,
Hope all is well at home.
My supplier of brake parts has retired and I note that you can get SS ones.
If you are in contact with your man could you kindly get me a full set for my PD. I'm going to sort the brakes out soon and it would be a good mod.

I'll get those spark plugs to you soon. There have been no takers so you've got all 12.

It would be fun to bring them up on the Honda but I don't think I've got time...anyone passing down the M6 in the next week or so who could be met at gate 19 ? If not then I'll post or courier them.
Regards
Father Ted.
