Also any pointers on how to remove the gearbox would be appreciated

Kind regards

Kieran, You need to join the car club for spares . Very good service and good prices.
You normaly need to remove the engine and gearbox together. Essentially disconnect everything. Remove front bumper and valence. Support engine on jack, preferably using a special support. And push car back to leave the engine sitting there. If you know what you are doing should be done in 30 mins. If you are a club member you can also search the technical archive with 7000 documents in it.

A note of caution that the flange on the gearbox tailshaft will need removal to pass through the chassis and invariably once your puller of choice is tightened, you don't want to be anywhere in the way when it lets go and flies out past the back bumper

Hi Kieranj123, Welcome to the Club! I appreciate that you would wish your Javelin to be leak-free, but you will probably find this is almost impossible to achieve. Javelins just love to leak, look under any Javelin and Jupiter when parked on clean concrete, and they will have oil spots under lots of places! Be prepared to have a good supply of oil. New seals will help, but somehow she will find a way to start dripping from somewhere!

Back to practicalities! If you are going to cahange the clutch plate, I would advise considering also changing the pressure plate assembly and the throwout bearing, they may also be near their end-of-life? As Keith advises, taking the Javelin engine and gearbox out isn't too hard, and you don't need a crane, just slide the assembly out forward on a trolley jack, firstly having the body of the car up off the wheels, or when the engine weight is released, the body will try and come up as well, and this makes things ackward.

Good luck and enjoy your Javelin, she will repay the care!

All the best, David

Hi David, the gearbox appears to need a top up once a week so I’m my books that’s far too much.
I would like to at least slow it down.

Once I have had a response from jcc spares I’ll get all the relevant parts ordered up and then get the engine out

Hi Kieran, Thanks for your post. Yes, that's way too much! Mine needed a top-up every four months at most, and never needed much. It's probably leaking from the rear seal around the output shaft, although the gear selector shaft runs in the aluminium case and gets sloppy. To me, Jowett's should have fitted bushings, that could be replaced, but didn't. Wear here leads to poor gear selection and leaks and, as it's wear in the casting, it cannot easily be taken out. By the way, as you probably already know, the gearbox likes SAE 30 engine oil, don't use any EP oil here, as it apparently attacks any bronze internals. You will find the engine too consumes oil at a rate. Jowett's reckoned 200 miles to the pint was good going, even with a new engine.

All the best, David

First make sure you are reading the dipstick correctly, the dipstick is fully down and it is the correct dipstick. Then put a newspaper under the box and see where the drips land. If at the front you could take the clutch cover off and see if it is coming from around the brass cone. The correct clutch housing to box gasket may not have been fitted. At the rear the oil seal may have perished. If in the middle then give the box a clean with gunk, dry and smother with talk powder. It should indicate where the leak is. There is a whole article on JT about gearbox leaks.

Due to change in Membership system your addition to the club members group is not automatic. I have asked how we can reinstate the system but have not received a decision yet, so have done it manually. You should have access now.

Sorry. Kieran, although I added you as a member to JT the system changed that when you logged on as it checked the old JCC list. So I need to add you to that list. Hopefully will be sorted in the next hour.i am waiting for a response from the team running the new website on providing access to the forum to the new list.
