Oil temp

Post by David Kemp »

I am currently out west doing a bit of opal mining, I have an old Ferguson TEA20 for processing my dirt.
Checking it's temperature with a heat gun I found the head ran a steady 85 degrees however the non water cooled components ran considerably hotter. The oil filter was 115 degrees.
So my thoughts are Jowett did do the right thing by adding an oil cooler to Javelin/ Jupiter.
When I get back to Briz I will be checking my Bradford's oli temp.
Good memories of Bradfords.

The ideal temp for oil is 110. Always have a thermostat on the oil feed to the cooler as cold oil kills bearings.

I found the oil temp on my Bradford to be very high, usually about 140-150 deg. in the summer (mind you 40deg + is normal temp here in summer).
Last year I fitted an oil cooler and have found that I now have reduced oil consumption, almost no oil leaks, the oil stays cleaner for much longer and an improvement in oil pressure on hot days. For the cooler weather I have a blanking plate fitted over it, so it is not too cool. I haven't checked the oil temp with the blanking plate fitted, but it seems ok. Overall I would say it was well worth doing.
