The server on which the Jowett websites run in the Google Cloud decided to overload on Thursday night. I have not heard whether this was some sort of denial of service attack. This affected the downlaod of the magazine so I quickly checked out an alternative using my Google Drive and sent a mailshot to all those that were using the service.
The Virtual machine running the websites was housed on a server in Belgium but that server ran out of puff. Normally you can restart the VM but there were no resources left, either in Belgium or London, so I had to move the VM to the US.
Normally this would not have been too difficult but the VM configuration did not move correctly so we have lost a couple of days sorting it out.
The websites jowettjupiter.com and jowett.org moved easily but jowett.net and JowettTalk needed a lot of work as the system did not initialise properly. There is still a problem with Member Services and I have not yet checked out the email system or the archive search.
There are ways to use load balancing to mitigate these issues, but they cost!
It is still not 100%, so anything posted in JowettTalk might get lost. Just be prepared to repost!
I do have a back up server at home which can reasonably quickly take over.
Outage.

Re: Outage.
The websites are getting there. Members Services, JowettTalk Search and Archive Search seem to be working now.

Re: Outage.
I just went to check that the mailshot I sent out on Thursday with links to download from the website works. It does, although a little slower than it did from Belgium taking 3 minutes to download the 10.4 MB Jowetteer from Iowa.

Re: Outage.
The mail system also seems to be working. Thanks to all those that alerted me of the issues.
I can now enjoy my weekend having spent from 5.30 a.m yesterday until gone midnight and then 8 a.m. this morning until now getting the system moved. I did have a 2 hour break in the Jupiter going to a car club meet yesterday though.
