I have recently swapped an engine over because running my spare engine will allow me to keep a car on the road while problems with the original engine are addressed at leisure before swapping back. The spare is a late one with rounded off clutch lever holes while the removed engine has the rectangular holes. I expected a straight swap on to the original gearbox but, of course, no. I was surprised to find that the diameter of the hole for the bronze casting that carries the thrust bearing was too small and the casting would not locate into the bell housing. Several other bits were tried to no avail until I found one that fitted - on the gearbox that had previously been mated with the spare engine. I know I have seen reference to different sized clutch fulcrum balls but I don't remember ever seeing anything about the bronze castings. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
