Re: The Mathewson's pre-war Jowett
He certainly doesn't sell this car does he? He is so misinformed about the prewar Jowetts and as for saying the interior looks like it was replaced in the 70s from a coach.......

Re: The Mathewson's pre-war Jowett
Hi Ken..
I was also rather surprised at some of the negative comments early on in the little film, and agree that perhaps he hadn't done the vendors any favours.
"Oh my god, they're just waiting to go wrong".
"It all started with the old Javelin".
"We don't like opposite/opposed engines"
And finally...."I'm not an expert on them"!
As Noel says in the February Jowetteer magazine, it's on Mathewson's website at this time, and can be seen on:-
https://www.mathewsons.co.uk/product/19 ... ok-invoic/
I have no knowledge of the vendor or whether the estimated price is anywhere near what we'd pay for it, but just wanted to highlight what looks like could be a rather nice pre-war Jowett with a little TLC.
See you at the Stratford Rally.
Tony.

I agree with you, Tony, it could be a really good buy. Can't believe it would be too difficult to get the car started either, the fact it doesn't run will affect the price dramatically! Can't wait to see you and all my friends at Stratford.

Re: The Mathewson's pre-war Jowett
I'm going jump in here & defend the said auction house - Mathewsons is no nonsense operation - they are very much 'Yorkshire' and tell you how it is - no fancy descriptions, no fancy catalogues, no artful yet deceiving pictures on a online platform, no long winded description of the marque & model either that others elaborate upon but in return provide next no information on the car for sale itself - Instead Mathewsons present the car as it is - if you are genuine in interest they invite you to come & look at it otherwise you can have a walk around description conversation on the end of the phone from them - but one persons honest opinion could differ much widely than that of another. Mathewsons charge like all classic car auction do on a commission basis - their current charges for this particular vehicle are: Vendor £35 entry fee plus 7.5% + vat of the hammer price - Purchaser 7.5% = vat of the hammer price - In all they gain roughly 15% of the hammer price for selling the vehicle
Should you want your vehicle sold through one of higher end auction houses, fancy colour images in a art house type auction catalogue, a endless description on a online entry, fancy auction venue, bells & whistles etc then get ready - The specialist auction houses that operate on this basis obviously have greater overheads but the margin is significantly higher too - End result is that 25% - 30% commission is clawed back jointly from the vendor / purchaser of the vehicle
I've been in this trade for 40 + years, bought & sold through the vast majority of the classic car auction houses - The majority of which use / treat the classic car auction platform has a hyped 'Theatre Production' and charge royally for it - Matthewsons operate on a business basis and not the over hyped theatre atmosphere of others - I think the word is 'Value for Money'
The car is question remains unsold - its available on a buy it now basis from them with a guide of £5,000 - £6,000 which I would think is pretty fair - Again defending Matthewsons I think that you'll find that they are pretty fair with their transport costs alongside which they a pretty unique in offering your vehicle through the next auction if it remains unsold at a previous one - I understand that they don't charge for storage on entered vehicles either - try that one on the rest classic car auction houses and see what the answer is !

Re: The Mathewson's pre-war Jowett
I'm not questioning their integrity as an auction house, Chris, just the apparent lack of knowledge about Jowetts, a product from the very county from which they operate. There is no simpler engine than the pre war Jowett engine, so to say 'it frightens the life out of me' when he looks under the bonnet is unnecessarily off-putting for a potential buyer not aufait with the marque.

Ken - Very valid point made but I suppose when you are auctioning off 500 + lots on a monthly basis it would be next to impossible to elaborate too much on every entry that you have in the sale - it will be interesting to see if it appears on a any of the TV footage that is associated with Mathewsons
