Very stiff gearchange

Post by alexander »

As some of you will know I’ve had problems with the gear change since getting the car two years ago. After adjust the gear operating shaft and selector shaft many times I finally took the selector bars out and found that the bars had been opened up, welded in the past and one had a crack starting. Thinking I had found the problem I changed the selector bars and cover as the cover also showed signs of wear but the change was still very stiff. Next I removed the selected bars and the cover plate and checked for smooth running of bars in plate, seemed OK but decided that I would lap the bars and plate with grinding paste to see if there was any witness marks that would show interference. Lapped the bars and plate until even light grey witness, cleaned off paste and replaced. Set operating and selector shafts to the manual, the change is very positive and still a little stiff but miles better than before.. One happy owner .

Well done. I have had the bars break when far from home so do carry a spare pair.
