Jowetts on Film

Post by Nick Webster »

For those of us lucky enought to be able to receive Talking Pictures TV, much pleasure can be gained from watching the old black and white films to see if a Jowett can be seen passing by in the background during exterior shots. Now I can report that I have found a film previously not known to me, which features a Jowett Javelin in a fairly prominent role. In "House of Blackmail" the heroine drives a Javelin, registered RPL 316. It features throughout the film which was released in 1953. Of particular interest are a couple of scenes where the windscreen has very obviously been removed to get a good view of the people inside. Cut to a shot of the car driving off complete with screen! There is a nice view of the interior when the hero finds some evidence in the glove box and the car is finally seen doing a circle and driving off as the end credits roll. This channel tends to repeat films every so often but I looked up the title and it is available on DVD too. The photo is a screen grab from the Reel Streets web site, which specialises in identifying film locations and what they look like now.

This car doesn't seem to be currently registered with DVLA so is likely scrapped. However, my father used to own the chassis of Jupiter RPL519, presumably sold by the same dealer shortly afterwards, which has now been restored.
