Greasing

Post by Barry20383 »

My 1953 late Javelin has grease nipples on the lower arm bush. I have put a high pressure grease gun on it but no grease will go in. As the later cars had rubber bushes did these need to be greased or have the nipples been put in just to blank the holes.

It is possible the bearings have been inserted and cover the grease hole. The nipple itself may be blocked or seized. Dismantle and check before everything is worn out. If you have rubber, not metal, suspension then there should be no grease nipples on the swivel pin at the bottom but there should be some (perhaps three) on the stub axle . There are no grease nipples on the lower swing arm.

Page 55 is correct suspension have taken out grease nipples and pumped grease through them they are not blocked .
Could it be possible that new swivel pins have been fitted from an earlier model with grease holes and nipples have been put in to block the holes.

Yes, do not grease otherwise your rubber will deteriorate!

The grease nipple has been left in the late suspension to allow the Jowett procedure for setting steering & tracking,
(see service manual) The grease nipple is removed & a set screw fitted to use the set-up equipment. No grease can pass
to the rubber bush as the hole is blocked by the bush metal outer sleeve. More modern methods can be used now to set tracking
etc.
Hope this helps
Alf.
