Re: Watford and District Classic Vehicle Club
St Albans steam fair. 2 June 2019
The Stanley Steam car .
I helped get Stanley going after a pipe burst and a new one was made up with a flaring tool. My reward was to spend an hour helping fire it up and a ride.
First the boiler had to be refilled with 6 gallons of water. This took about half hour of siphoning. Stanley uses about a gallon a mile so you need to find some full horse troughs. Also switch on the electric water pump that adds some tea like liquid to reduce corrosion.
Next pump up the pressure in the paraffin tank. Stanley uses about a gallon of paraffin a mile. Next heat up the vaporiser which took about 20 mins with a blow torch. Then pump up the primer lighter fuel when the vaporiser is warm and pray it ignites. Then feed in the paraffin and hope that ignites. Wait for 20 minutes for boiler to reach temperature and check boiler pressure. Make sure you pass steam through the supercharger or it will go into meltdown. Prime the oil pump. Close the boiler lid....now have I forgotten anything?
