Speedometers In Early Jowett Motor Cars

Post by Mike Allfrey »

Hello All,

Does anyone know when speedometers were first introduced in Jowett motor cars:
Date of first prototype installation?
Date first introduced in a production car?
Driven by front wheel?

I have been asked these questions, but I do not know.

Thank you in advance,

Mike Allfrey (Melbourne, Australia).

Not sure about earliest Jowett to have speed, but I do know most of the twenties ones had a Stewart speedometer driven by cable from a gear mechanism belt-driven off the prop-shaft.

Hello Mike and Ken.
The photo below was taken at the 2013 Basingstoke Rally.
On the inside of the off-side front wheel is a sprocket.
I wonder whether it was used to drive a speedometer. M. Kav.. could confirm, but he doesn't do JowettTalk.
Some makes used this to drive a windscreen wiper, but on the tiller-steered Jowett it looks like the latter is hand twist only.
