Jowett Javelin Technical Data And Information

Post by Mike Allfrey »

G'day From Down Here,

I have just spent considerable time on the JCC Javelin Technical Data edited by Bob Jones (East Anglian Section) and issued in October 2001. I have to say that Bob must have put an enormous amount of work into this handbook for club members. My compliments on an important task.

I was browsing through my Jowett 'stuff' stored in the nether regions of my computer, and found this gem. I soon came to realise that Bob or someone else had made use of an optical character reader, because numerous '1' digits had been interpreted by the OCR as 'I' and so on e.g. 'he' instead of 'be', along with others. Also noted were several incorrect metric conversion values. This is entirely understandable in a 155 page document.

In addition, I found that my PDF version did not have any of the illustrations referred to in the text. Does anyone have a set? I assume that they were in a separate document, because there is no mention in the Contents listing.

I settled down to converting the PDF into a MS Word document and sort of correcting errors. This soon became a sort of mountain of work, probably dominated by the conversion of the PDF to Word, in that my Word document persisted in reverting its 'language' to English (United States) while I was trying to operate in English (Australia). Extremely time consuming, that way alone!

No matter, the task has been completed and is now contained in just 81 pages, mainly due to deletion of large vacant spaces and, very likely, far exceeding the average person's attention span. I think I have inherited some of my Grandmother's Scottish ancestry, by getting as much text on a single page as possible. Hence, I use narrow margins and other methods of conserving text to fill a page. I now use MS Office 365 and whichever version of Word that may be, sometimes it seems to be currently MS Word 2010, 2016 and 2019 - so, who knows!

The purpose of revising the Bob Jones document is to distribute it to Australian club members, and the rest of the world if desired. I hope I have not trodden on any toes with this project, but I have good memories of Jowetteers such as Drummond Black, Ian Dearie, Keith Rumsey and Harry Brierley - all who have helped us over the years. It was also good to read W.B's. piece on the development of the Jowett Javelin in Motor-Sport magazine, which I remember from school days. Thank you for that!

Now, if only I could get the illustrations to go with the document - CD-R or USB Flash Drive might be best.

I will get back to other matters now,

Mike Allfrey.
