The new Library
The first stage of the major upgrade is taking place so you may find some delay in response and some changes taking place.
I am trying to copy any posts made recently into the new database so as not to lose anything but this is a laborious process.
With about 30GB to transfer it may take a while but the JT service should stay reasonable available during this time.

New library operational.
The first stage is complete with the new JowettLibrary which is a transformed copy of the JowettGallery.
All links in posts should now go to the equivalent place in the new JowettLibrary. Links which pointed to items that had been deleted in the Gallery have been left but a message has been added to tell you the link does not work. Note it would not have worked anyway in the old system. If you find one will which still does whilst the JowettGallery is still in place let me know , please!
Since links outside JowettTalk still point to the JowettGallery the old Gallery will be kept for a while whilst those links are also updated.
These links include those in jowett.net and jowett.org, and also the single sign on login process which will bring up the 'Login to Club Services' page and open the JT and JG personal album page in JowettGallery. Both these pages are superfluous and you can and SHOULD now go direct to the BOARD INDEX as the JowettGallery is now defunct and will be soon removed. I will change the login process very shortly so that you go straight to the Forum and Library.
This will take place anyway when the forum software is updated to the latest version which will be the next stage of update.
The final stage will be the removal of the Gallery and the update of the platform software to the latest release required in future versions of the Forum software.
I will try to prune and archive posts and topics no longer relevant during the coming weeks so that the structure is more organised. ANy comments on this subject please put in Library Discussion forum.

Updated software complete.
The second stage is now complete with the phpbb forum software having been upgraded.
This also means the single sign on system is no longer used and the JowettGallery should also not be used.
Please contact me if you have any issues or comments.
There are still a few things to do including updating jowett.org and jowett.net and some clean up of the new forum and library. These tasks can now been done more leisurely.

Login updated, Gallery access blocked
The login process has now been updated and cleaned up with the links to all the member services and the forum and library.
Any links still trying to access the Gallery will fail. Please report the link and where it is if you find one.
Note that every JowettGallery item that was transferred has an identifier attached to it. So if you want to find it in the new Library use the search box and prefix the identifier with g_id= as the search string e.g. g_id=34673
You can then either copy the URL to the post that the Gallery item is in.

Why you should login -Privileges
I have logged in as an ordinary user, as a club member and not logged on and used as a guest.
Each will have different privileges. Guests, Registered users, Club members, Special groups and Admins can see different things .
As a registered user you should be able to see most of JowettTalk including all the personal albums.
A club member can see the magazines of each club, the Library sections and the Club Discussion forum.
Someone who does not login (a guest) will not see any of the club only areas or the Personal albums or the remembrance forum or any of the Library (including the Library discussion forum). They will however see the rest of the Whats On, Buy n Sell, and Technical categories which should attract them to register and join the club.
Please note that the first post of each album might be blank and not contain an image. There will be an image icon or other error message if the system is faulty.

Topic sort order
I have added an extension to the forum software that allows forums to be assigned sort orders based on various criteria in addition to the standard post time. This was because the personal albums were jumbled and are now in name alphabetical order. Note that those people that created albums within their Gallery Personal album have a forum assigned to them. These forums are in firstname/surname alphabetical order.
I have not yet decided what to do with personal albums as I do not want to create extra work for Forumadmin.
Those who have them can continue to add to them. If you have a forum of your own then you can create topics. Those who only have a topic can add posts to that topic.
By gut feel is that you should add posts or topics in the relevant existing forum or topic. If you think you have misplaced a post or topic then a moderator or Forumaadmin can move it to the correct place. What do you think?
I am also considering making the Library read only except for curators who can add and reorganise it, but I do not want to make comment on articles in the library difficult. If I allow posing into the Library then there will be curating required to keep it in a reasonable state. So please come forward budding curators. I would love to have one for each forum!

Topics of permanent interest.
I have started to move topics in an attempt to make the more useful and interesting topics more visible and effectively archive what 'I' consider less useful. So I have moved some of the events that have had lots of views and posts into the club sections.
I have already made a separate forum for the magazines in each club and may add another for events. Currently they reside in the WHAT IS ON section and forums for each region. These forums I think should move to each club. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
I think I will do the same with the technical topics.. .....

Media BBCODE
I have removed the old BBCODE for media, audio and video as these did not work. I am waiting for the next release of phpbb to provide the service again. The files can still be downloaded to your PC and played with your media player but cannot be seen in an embedded window within phpbb.

ISSUE posting a new topic.
Tony Fearn reported an issue which I tracked down to a database corruption. I had to go back to the early Friday morning back-up to clear it, but after some investigation I still think there is an issue with the attachments. I have re-enabled the board but we may still have an issue. So please bear with me as this might be difficult to sort.
Both issues are now fixed.

Platform upgrade
The much awaited platform upgrade has taken place moving from the very old version 5.4 to version 7.2 of php.
I have also fixed the issue with attachments so please enjoy and add all those documents, press clippings and photos that you have on Jowetts into the Legacy Project.
Please inform me immediately of any issues that you find.

Indexes
To assist in finding things in the library I will be adding some indexes.
Technical Library -edited technical notes for all models
Engineering Drawings
Press cuttings and publications
If you have any other indexes you think will be useful then please comment in Library Discussion forum
Please look at the indexes and see if you have any contribution you can make whether that be adding to the index or adding to our library.

Reorganisation, best bits and active topics.
A lot of work today sorting out my own personal and public albums and moving what I think was in the wrong place to be most accessible.
So I have moved relevant topics to places like events, the technical library and the Technical forum.
I have also created a 'BEST BITS' forum in each part of the Technical Forum to not bury good topics in the sea of the forum.
The technical forum also pulls the ACTIVE TOPICS from the various sections, meaning you can see all the active technical topics in one place by clicking on the Technical Forum link. You can still go to the particular section e.g. Pre War and see all the topics in whatever order you have set in your User Control Panel.
The active topics facility is particularly useful in the Co-operative space as it alerts of any new contributions across the Legacy forums. Of course, you can still use the show new posts under QUICK LINKS.
I have also moved Personal Albums to under Social sub forum and emptied the Public Albums by moving to relevant areas.
If you have any suggestions as to which topics should be moved to best bits then please let me know.

The Legacy Project
The Legacy project section in the Library subforum has been moved to and combined with the Legacy Project in the Co-operative space subforum. The intention is that the Library becomes the permanent home for any contributions and the Co-operative space is where contributions are deposited and curated before being moved to their permanent home.
Any items replaced by new items or thought to be no longer useful will be moved to the Defunct Archive subforum.
This should reduce the number of places to look for any information and the clutter, although there are still too many places! But you always have the search facility.
There are now only two sections to the Library, aligning it with the sections in the Legacy project. 1= Technical AND 2= History and Press Cuttings.
The magazine section of the Legacy project aligns with each Magazine section of each club.
I think I have moved everything useful that was in the Legacy Section into the Library. This will allow easier creation of a decent index of what we have and do not have in the Library.

Attachments
There are a few ways in which attachments can be shown in a post and you may have noticed that many posts created by the import from the JowettGallery have duplicate images. I have found out what has caused this and will try to fix all these posts.
Orphans.
When you upload an attachment into a post that attachment is associated with the post and both the attachment and the post are owned by the poster.
The post has a flag which says if there is an attachment associated with it. The attachment has a flag which says whether it is orphaned and does not have a post associated with it. But the attachment also remembers to which post it was attached.
An issue arises if the attachment's orphan flag is on yet it has an associated post.
Access failure.
A ' General Access Failure' issue also arises when editing the post if the post and attachment owner are different which does occur since I associated the owner of the attachment with the owner mapped from the original Gallery owner which may be different from the owner of the post using the attached file.
If you come across this issue please inform me by messaging the URL of the offending post.
Ways of displaying attachments.
If you upload an attachment, but do not click on the 'Place in Line' button then the attachment will appear in an attachment box in the submitted post. Note you must have some text in the post message box or you will get an error.
If you upload an attachment, and do click on the 'Place in Line' button then the attachment will appear as an image without an attachment box in the submitted post. If it is a document then an icon and hyperlink are displayed. Place your cursor where in the message you want the image and something like this is added to your post
There is another way to display attachments which ignores the ownership and association with the post that is very useful. This uses the URL which calls the attachment viewer. If you mouse over the image then you should see this appear in your browser, or right click and copy the image URL.
You should get something like this.
You can combine this into BBCODE using the LINK and IMG BBCODE buttons.
The may be added if the attachment has a thumbnail associated with it.
Note the system still will not allow access to attachments to those users not having the necessary permissions, so you can safely post 'club only' links in publicly viewable posts, although a guest would not see the image.
Where have my attachments gone?
You may also have had the issue of clicking on the link in the attachment upload box and finding you lost your attachments that you just uploaded. Most annoying. Well this creates the orphans mentioned above. I have about 200 like this and am trying to resolve which ones are true orphans and which ones were eventually uploaded and are duplicates. So I will be publishing a list of orphans that you may like to claim and save for posterity.
Multiple attachments.
You can upload more than one attachment to a post , either individually or in batches. But be careful, I would do no more than five at a time and that number will depend on the speed of your network and the size of the files. You may get an HTTP error which seems to screw up the browser and you need a few backspaces or a page reload to clear. I would also submit your partially completed post and then edit it because if you do not you may have to upload all the files again. This will also create many poor orphans!
Every time you add another attachment the index numbers used to reference the attachment change rather than simply incrementing the index number. This I find annoying and it can cause havoc if something goes wrong whilst creating the post. Always check it looks good after you submit.
The order in which they are displayed may not be the order you would like. If you add attachments one by one then they generally appear in reverse order to the order they were loaded. If you upload a lot at once you may find they are not loaded in the order you expect. So if the order is important use the 'Place in Line' button after moving the cursor to where you want them to appear.
