Starter motors

Post by David Kemp »

I currently do not have a starter motor for my Jupiter, & looking at eBay, if the word Jowett comes up the price is twice what people want for Austin etc. Looking at a cross reference chart Jowett starters seem to be the same as Austin A40's. Do Jowett starters interchange with other cars or are they unique?
High torque, gear reduction starters are sold as suitable for Jowett, MG etc. are they guessing?
Good memories of Bradfords.

Reportedly, the modern geared starters as applied to the Javelin/Jupiter, work well, however when looking for a unit, remember that the starter approaches the flywheel from the back side and so has to rotate in the opposite direction from the vast majority of other starters out there.

Phillip is correct, the Jowett spins backwards. Berkeley used the same starter. New high torque "super starters" are available in the UK. https://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/ ... tegory/273

Hi David,

The JCCA should have stock of s/h starter motors (not yet rebuilt) for Javelin/Jupiter for sale at very reasonable prices to club members. I recommend that you contact our club Spares Officer in Queensland via the contact details in the newsletter. I'm sure that Jim will be able to help you.

When club member Trevor White passed away in 2016, his stock of Javelin spares was offered to all members of the club for free, providing you were willing to travel to northern Victoria and collect it. Trevor's large quantity of spares included two starter motors, and eventually most of it went to our members in South Australia, but some rare parts went into club stock.

If all else fails, get in touch with me by PM and I will see what I can do to help.

By the way, the I believe that the correct Lucas part number for the anti-clockwise starter motor used on a Jav/Jup is as follows based on date stamps on actual starters:

1948 - 1949 Type M35G starter p/n 25012A/D (All are interchangeable as a complete unit)
which was replaced by the Type M35G1 starter p/n 25025 sometime in 1949
1949 onwards Type M35G1 starter p/n 25025A/D (All are interchangeable as a complete unit - most of the units viewed were p/n 25025B)

Cheers,

Andrew
