The town centre’s Victorian legacy includes the Majestic Hotel and Valley Gardens – both key sites for our forthcoming rally.
The Majestic Hotel: Our choice of Rally Base. Built in 1899, it’s surrounded by 8 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens that overlook the town with 15 function rooms and a fully equipped spa and health club. A 5 minute walk takes you into the thriving town centre offering boutique and designer shopping.
Valley Gardens created around 1903 will be the site of our Rally Field.

“Spring in the Spa” October update
THE NORTHERN SECTION WOULD LIKE TO INVITE YOU TO JOIN US AT THE:
2018 JOWETT NATIONAL RALLY IN HARROGATE, NORTH YORKSHIRE

“Ay up..... Nah then, last since a sin thi thas ad t’aplication form for’t rally. An ah ‘ope thas booked tha room afore its t’late an all t’places a gone. Reet ‘eres a bit more about ‘t‘otel and its connections wi Prince ‘Enry o Prussia an ‘is car rally, jus so tha nos wots wot.”
The Majestic Hotel and the Anglo-German motor tour of Great Britain
The Majestic Hotel opened in July 1900 and proved a great success. The building suffered damage in September 1940 when 3 bombs struck it. After the war the hotel was restored and remains much the same today including the Venetian chandeliers and spa murals running the full length of the great lounge – just as they did in the 1900s. The Hotel is currently set in 8 acres of grounds, has 170 bedrooms and 8 spacious function rooms. It also offers a great range of facilities including a Health Club with an indoor swimming pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, fully equipped gym, fitness studio, outdoor tennis court as well as spa and beauty treatments.
In the years before the First World War, Europe’s spas were frequented by royalty. Prince Henry of Prussia stayed at The Majestic Hotel while organising an Anglo-German car rally in Yorkshire. The Prince Henry Tour was an automobile race organized by the Prince and was a gesture of sporting good will in honour of King George V's coronation. Prince Henry participated to the tour himself. Thirty seven German cars from the Kaiserlichter Automobil-Klub (mostly Opel, Benz and Mercedes, with 70-80 horse-power) versus 28 British cars from the Royal Automobile Club.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was one of the drivers for the British team (as No. 52). Each entrant had to drive his own car so Conan Doyle was driving his green 16 horse-power Dietrich-Lorraine. Each car had to carry an observer from the opposite country: an army or navy officer. Conan Doyle was hence accompanied by Count Carmer, Rittmeister of Breslau Cuirassiers. Picture: Arthur Conan Doyle in his laundelette Dietrich-Lorraine.
Excerpt from ‘Harrogate and Ripon in the Great War’, By Stephen Wade.
The race started from Homburg (Germany) on 4 July 1911 and ended in London (UK) on 19 July 1911. The British team won the race. The trophy was an ivory statue of a young lady with the word "peace" engraved below. The two teams joined in toasting the Kaiser at the Royal Automobile Club.
Rally bookings: The 2018 rally booking form was in the September Jowetteer and can be downloaded here and to date we have received approximately 60 hotel bookings. Please note: The account name for bank transfer and for cheque payments is: Jowett Rally 2018.
There’s a dedicated webpage where you can find more information about the rally and includes maps of the Anglo-German motor tour of Great Britain: http://www.springinthespa.co.uk

I also have photos of all the pre-war attendees, but this photo above shows, if nothing else, how sunny it was!
