Lights in general

Post by Tim Neville »

My E0/PB Javelin has the original early rear lights, which Bill Lock says are 461/1, which they are - although one of the lenses says 477/1! Iam keen to stay original in my restoration if possible. Both lenses are cracked, I've contacted JCC spares but apart from an acknowledgement saying that I'll be lucky to get some, I've heard no more as yet. Bill Lock reckons he might be able to get some refurbs for about £75 each (gasp!)
I've noticed on e-bay a chap selling repro 477/1's for old motor bikes, obviously somebody is making repro stuff. Does anyone have any knowledge on this subject, or any useful info re. lights in general?
Also the sealed lens/reflector units of my 5" headlamps while not in bad 'nick' could do with better reflector surfaces, anybody got any ideas or info?

Regarding the headlamp reflectors, Bill Lock got mine resilvered and generally refurbished.

Hi ,
I wanted the same for my car. I had no luck in finding the fittings with the flat red lenses. A little research told me that the light fittings were identical in size to the front sidelights fitted on the top front of the wing to some Jaguars of the 1960s, poss 420G, although with a slightly domed clear lense. If course these are for a single filament bulb. I welded a 5watt/21watt bulbholder to them and painted the glass with red glass paint. They look good. Certainly better than than VW. Incidentally the fixing screw is the same as the one holding the horn push in. If you go down this road I have some of the paint left. I can let you have some if it hasn't dried up.
The Dolomite I sold last year had twin 5 inch headlamps so this might be a source for them. Try the Dolly club. I think Steve Waldenburg is a member and an owner.
Regards
Ted

Rear Lights

Post by Eric Aldcroft »

I have a single rear light lens marked 461-1A -- it is slightly convex. You are welcome to it, if you can find a matching one. If you would like a picture of it, just send me an email. Also, Kip Motor (www.kipmotor.com) in the USA lists 461R (red) lenses in their orphan book (downloadable from their site) for $35 US each.

Cheers, Eric Aldcroft

G'dday From The Sunny South,

I think the Rolls Royce Club had some Lucas rear lamps made at some horrific price. Probably way beyond a Jowetteer's budget.

Keep looking, they are a nice lamp.

David Taylor from the JOAC looked into the reproductions back in 2003.
The company was a Rolls Royce specialist and offered the 461/4 price 58 pounds each. They turned out to be two lens units only - second hand in not very good condition.

Old stock sometimes turns up on EDAY but go for $150+ us dollars.

I think a while back a reproduction turned up on EBAY in the UK but did not see any more of them.

Update!
I have obtained 2 genuine original 461/1 's. They are new old stock and compared to some of the prices I'd been quoted for replacements, they were not too costly. It goes to show - they're still out there somewhere, whatever 'they' are!
