I am currently slowly stripping and rebuilding a Jowett freewheel unit.
I have managed to get most of it apart, other than the ' core' of the unit - the spring and centre bearing assembly.
So far, so good. Only the output shaft bearing needs replacement so a good cleanup, a new bearing and careful reassembly and adjustment should restore it to operational condition.
BUT I really would like to know how that ' core' unit is made up. I am reluctant to go further without knowing what to expect. There is a HUGE spring involved!
Anyone got drawings or data sheets?

Hi Ian,
Take you pick from the various Humfrey-Sandberg free-wheel devices that were available back then:

Re: Jowett's freewheel device
Philip ( et all):-
Now back from a week in Somerset.
My car is fitted with the remains (casing only) of an HS unit.
I hsvey a 4 speed 'box fitted with a Jowett freewheel device that works - or it will when I have fitted a new output shaft bearing.
Alan Benewith gave me a disk with LOADS ofHS data but nothing on the Jowett units.
Hence the appeal.
I will though have a look as you suggest.
Thanks for the feedback.

Philip:-
I have now looked at that site as you suggested.
There is some material that was not on Alan's disc, so thank you for that.
I have now got to the innerds of the Jowett unit and there is another bearing needing replacement.
Mostly though it seems in fairly good order, partly I suspect because it was 'locked up' for most of it's working life!

Re: Jowett's freewheel device
For anyone still looking, the three bearings are all RMS 8.
Disassembling the 'core' of the unit turned out to be straightforward but needs care and the application of a sprocket puller = making sure to miss the oil thrower ring.
Reassembly is now awaiting the arrival of the bearings.
The base reason for the exercise is to see if the 4 speed 'box with Jowett freewheel will fit - or can easily be made to fit - the space occupied by the existing 3 speed 'box and the Humphrey Sandberg unit.
I know the clutch operating arrangement is different but seems to be only the addition of the 'rolling' linkage to an otherwise identical cross shaft.
Of course, if anyone knows better/more . . !
