Being a year even older than last year, and against motoring on an 'old jalopy' on the actual motorway, I have decided once again to split the journey to the National Rally into two days of driving, to get to Peebles in 'Sarah Jane' the 1933 'Flying Fox' on the first 'shoulder day'' which is Thursday 25th May. I have booked a room at the Premier Inn near Junction 44 of the M6 (CA3 0JR) for the night of Wednesday 24th May. This is just above Carlisle on the A7 and it's about 120 miles from home (BB5 5QQ). When using an old road system such as the A6, I reckon on covering around 23-25 miles per hour, driving at a comfortable rate in the Jowett, not taking into account occasional stops, so it's going to take at least 5 hours to drive the 120 miles to Carlisle, and that's enough for a day these days.

This stop should leave about 75 miles still to do the following day to reach the Peebles Hydro in good time to check in, chill and relax, without having to get up at the crack of dawn.

I mention all this this because last year on the way down to Tewkesbury, some of you may recall that I stopped near Shrewsbury and thought I'd be the lone Jowetteer in the Travelodge. Fortunately we made a jolly party with the addition of Sandra and Bill, and John and Anne Ellis. I expect to be the only Jowetteer in the Junction 44 Premier Inn this year on May 24th, as it's probably a day or two earlier than when most people will be travelling up to Peebles, even though they're retired.

Nevertheless, I'm hoping to be surprised again.

Tony.

Tony,
Ye'll tack the high road !!! Good planning. Once you leave Carlisle you are probably going to take the A7 North.. To Selkirk / Gala and then A72 to Peebles.

May I suggest an alternative which is slightly challenging ( for a bit ) but definitely more scenic. Take the A7 from M6 Junction 44 to Longtown. Turn right 1/2 mile north of Longtown onto A6071 towards Gretna. ( you may even wish to use the M6 up to Junction 45 ) At Gretna ( Junction 45 ) go north on the B7076 This used to be the original A74 before the Motorway was built ) through Kirkpatrick-Fleming, Ecclefechan, Lockerbie and turn north onto the A701 4miles south of Moffat. Follow the A701 to Moffat. Leaving Moffat on the A701 is where it starts to become slightly challenging , but not for a Jowett, as after climbing for about 4 miles you pass the " Devil's Beef Tub " ( A spectacular Cauldron where you seldom see the bottom !! worth finding a parking spot ) Continue north on the A701 you soon come to the " Source of the River Tweed " The roads you take from now on roughly follow the River Tweed to Peebles. Continue on the A701, which is seldom busy, through Tweedsmuir to Rachan Mill. Turn right onto the B702 signposted Drumelzier. Follow the A 702 for 7 1/2 miles to the T junction with the A72. Turn right onto the A72 towards Peebles. As you enter the outskirts of Peebles you will pass Haylodge Park ( our Rally Site ) on your right. Follow the A72 through the town to the roundabout with the Edinburgh Road, then take the A72 for 200 yds to the Hotel entrance on your left.

I put this route forward as a suggestion. I love using this route in the Jupiter.

A correction is required to the suggested route :-
Third sentence should read Turn LEFT 1/2 mile north of Longtown onto A6071 ...................... That sorts the route out !!!!

There's also another correction.....At Rachan Mill, turn right onto the A712, not the A702.

Thanks for the alternative route. I mentioned it to David Mason at the NW post-New Year lunch yesterday. David also recommended it as a very scenic drive. As I'm coming up alone in the 'Flying Fox', and having recently experienced the A7 on our trip to Portobello for Bill's funeral, I'm going to stick to that route, as it seemed a nice rolling road. I also now know a good little café in Hawick.

So 'I'll tack the Middle Road'.

See you there.

Today I have spoken to a leading light in the Northern section over the hill in Yorkshire, and told him of my plans. Perhaps there will be more of us in that Premier Inn on the 24th May.

Entry Form

Post by Keith Clements »

Entry Form in Gallery, JCC Ltd Club Documents
The rally committee should provide this without me having to scan it in so that we have a more efficient and cheaper system without spending so much on paper and postage!
Email is (probably) more reliable than snail mail.
Even better would be an electronic form which can be created either (or both) in Adobe pdf or Word Doc format.

Note you can download this document and use the 'Fill and Sign' Tool of the free Adobe Reader DCto complete and sign the form. Then send it electronically back to the Rally Committee who could then be paperless and green. Perhaps the Scottish section is supporting Scottish Forestry. :D
Even better would be an on-line form.
Even better would be to use the online booking system used for the Basingstoke Rally that linked to the membership list so no form filling was necessary!
This linked to an Excel spreadsheet so that no manual input was required and organisers could concentrate on the important things.

The JCC has been on computer since 1974 but we still have a way to go.

KEEPING THIS TOPIC NEAR TO THE TOP OF THE THREAD IN CASE YOU'VE FORGOTTEN ABOUT IT.

Perhaps we'll see more fellow Jowetteers meeting up at the Premier Inn near Junction 44 of the M6 as I've had a couple of phone calls recently asking about the accommodation.
Remember this is for the Wednesday night for people that will arrive at Peebles on the Thursday 'shoulder day'.
Of course the Premier Inn hotel can be accessed from the A7 if you aren't using the motorway.

Here's a thingumyjig.
You might need one if you have a pre-war.
See April's Jowetteer magazine.
They will be available on the Jowett Junior stand at Peebles.
There aren't many, so you'll have to be quick.

Spent the day going through my check-list for the 'Flying Fox' to Peebles via Carlisle.
Just needed a bit of Hypoid 90s in the back axle.
The 3rd brush in the dynamo seemed ok.
Hoping for a dry run to the Borders.
Looking forward to seeing friends again.

Fancy Dress

Post by Forumadmin »

In case it had escaped your notice, you are encouraged to attend in fancy dress on Saturday evening. This is always popular and usually brings some jollity to the occasion. The Rally report cut from the May Jowetteer below also suggests an alternative for Sat and Mon , some trekking with alpacas so bring your walking boots.

Rally Report Update
In this, the last report for our 2017 event, I
am going to cover a few additional bits of
information and a bit of recap regarding your
forthcoming visit to the rolling hills of the
Borders. From many discussions, you all
seem to have very good knowledge on your
preferred route to Peebles so it only allows
me to restate the post code for our sat-nav
users. If you use EH45 8LX this will guide
you directly to the hotel. The hotel has an
unofficial one way system for in and out traffic
and the Main Entrance is the one nearest
to Peebles and only 100 yards from the roundabout at the bottom of Edinburgh Road.
The main entrance is on the A72 Peebles to Galashiels road. On arrival on the Friday,
as there is not one large car park, and we are required to spread Jowett parking
over five locations, there will be marshals in attendance to assist you. Please be courteous
and respect their advice. With over 100 cars attending, plus other guests, we will
all require to show consideration. Jowett car areas will be clearly signposted with
moderns using general parking areas.
Only trailers that have been advised to Sandra can be accommodated and please bring
some form of hitch, or other method of security.
As all attending will be issued with name badges on arrival, the hotel sees no requirement
to have ticketed functions and wearing them will greatly assist hotel staff. Our
evening meal on the Friday will be in the main restaurant and this can be booked to
suit your arrival time. Bookings can be done by phoning the hotel on 01721 720602
from Monday 22nd May giving your name and quoting JOWETT CAR CLUB.
Planned dining times are from 7pm to 9pm. We will be on a three-choice restaurant
menu. Saturday and Sunday dining will be private functions held in the ballroom.
We have already had “secret guests” in residence and the feed- back was positive.
The local Ford dealership has kindly offered Jowett vehicles complimentary use of
their valeting facilities on the Friday and the Saturday. Full details, and a booking facility,
will be from Rally Reception in the hotel. Two bays will be available for our
use on both days and BP fuel is available at the same location.
Catering facilities on the Sunday field day in Haylodge Park will be available in the
large marquee. The caterer is one that we use at local shows and has a good reputation.
Now, we have located an Alpaca farm four miles from the Peebles Hydro and they
welcome visitors to engage with the animals and feed them treats: see bottom left,
page 24;
Trekking with the Alpacas is available at a small cost but must be booked in advance.
Jean McDonald, the owner has set aside times on the Saturday and on the
Monday for visits and Trekking. If you are interested in visiting the Alpacas could
you please let Drummond know on receipt of this report and I will arrange bookings.
Please remember to bring sensible footwear.
The rally committee are now in the final stages of completion of our planning to
welcome you to Peebles.
Please e-mail or phone Drummond if you require any further rally information
which would assist in making your visit more pleasure able.
Look forward to meeting you all in Peebles in a few weeks’ time and remember :–
**** PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO BRING YOUR FANCY
DRESS FOR THE SATURDAY FUN EVENING. ****

Thanks for restating the content of the MAY jowetteer. Only THREE more sleeps and we are off to PEEBLES. The weather is looking good for the weekend so lets hope the forecasters get it right . Now ALPACAS, Yes trekking is on the agenda, BUT ONLY IF YOU BOOK through myself. To date I have had only TWO bookings for Saturday morning and none for Monday. Do not leave it to the last minute............ DO IT NOW.

We are still working on the rally preparation mainly in getting many boxes filled and labelled ready for the transport to arrive on Thursday morning. So , we look forward to meeting you all on Thursday / Friday or over the weekend.

Have a safe Journey
