The Long and Short of it

Post by James Baxter »

4 Seat tourers from 1926 and 1927 respectively.
Who prefers the long and who prefers the Short?
Please say why, and also if you have a biased viewpoint!!!
I have two votes either way from my non-Jowett vintage car friends.
Edited to say, i can only keep one!!

Yes, after 51 years in his ownership, he has decided to concentrate on the steam cars.

Must......resist.....urge......to......make......cheap.....joke.....about.....wife......preferring......a......bit......more.......length......

Personally, I like the long one over short, the practicality and general comfort of a bit more legroom is good news, even with two of us there always seems to be an opportunity to give someone a lift or chuck a bag on the back seat for weekends away.

For similar reasons I've never really understood people who buy a modern saloon when an estate is available, but they must have their reasons. I suppose they probably don't need to move engines, 20 sets of ski gear or a month of shopping from Costco around.

I must admit i am really struggling here.
Generally, i think the Short wheelbase model of most scenarios like this win out.
I am thinking here of SWB Ferraris and the like. Coughs on back of hand.
The Short Yellow car is tighter, and generally in better fettle, but that said, the long one is like a tatty old leather slipper, very comfortable indeed. The Long chassis skips about less it has to be said. Sure the rear wheels lock up easier as there is less weight over them. Performance of these two is very similar indeed.
Purely on looks, its the short yellow for me.
Close your eyes when driving, and its the long blue.
Fit most in, its the long blue.
On Rarity, the Short yellow.
Both have original upholsty, so thats a dead heat.
On colour, the yellow is so not subtle, so i would have to give it the long Blue.
But ultimately for me, i have to be able to go into the garage and say Phooooarrr!
Bit like i do when i enter the bedroom. Easy tiger! So by a hairs breadth , the Short Chummy wins for me.

To put a spanner in the works, I'd Have to say the short one! As styling wise it looks more in proportional than the long, Even though you gain all the leg room and space in the long, The short just looks and seems more "aesthetically pleasing". Plus the Yellow is a great stand out! Ive got a Yellow Jowett! Colour :)

Whilst I would welcome either car in to my collection, there is something about the short, it is more in proportion with it's wheel size, along with the radiator cowl dictating the nose width of the vehicle which I find agrees with the length & proportion of the body - it appears to carry it's body with more grace & style than it's longer / bigger brother - the long appears a little clumsy in style - almost as someone has thrown a pick up body off the rear of the chassis and replaced it with a home built car body - but in the end it all comes down to what appeals to the individual !

I have decided to sell the long one.

If anyone would like a 1926 long chassis car please get in touch.
It is in original condition. Tatty, but very useable. Some might restore it, some might preserve it. You choose.
Car was recently MOT tested.
