Steering box replacement

Jack and I struggled with getting the steering box back on last night after Chris had welded up the support bracket. So some questions.

1. Is it better to remove the steering column from the car. Then fit and adjust the eccentric bush off the car and replace the assembly?
2. Can the steering column be fed through from underneath the car with the steering box attached?
3. If so, does the gearbox change column have to be removed and then fed back through the aperture?

The engine and gearbox have been removed and the steering arm had to be disconnected to remove the box so all is reasonably clear to do all this.

Although I did change the box a couple of years back with all the above in place , I now feel that the proper way to do it is to fit the assembly with the shims and eccentric bush properly located. Otherwise it is going to be a pain to adjust in situ.

As we are going to have another go tonight a prompt reply is asked for!!!!

ALWAYS ASSEMBLE AND ADJUST OUT OF THE CAR. Better with the engine out to refit but it can be fitted with engine in with a bit of a struggle and dropping the engine off the front mounts and slight bending of the floorpan. !!!!

Steering box out as suggested but then decided to try to cure oil /grease leaks,
There were two one from the back and one from the front.
the back hopefully will be cured by a new gasket and new O ring.
The front (after talking with Bill Lock) could be more of a challenge involving grinding off weld and drilling out rivets.
