Oil filter gasket mod

Post by Forumadmin »

The mod involving O rings has been reported elsewhere but today I decided to try to cure the oil leak from my previous attempt at the mod. David Morris had kindly sent up a couple of kits after he had researched the correct pinch for the O rings. One piece of aly David had already cut out; but as you can see, and as David warned me not all housings are the same, the holes were not in the correct place. One hole vented to the open air!

David had sent me a blank piece of ally, so I marked this out putting the centre of the holes not where you might first expect. I chose a drill 3 mm smaller than the O rings so that the eventual shape of the holes could maximize the very small amount of land between some of the holes and other holes or the outside world.

This was the plate I took out that used smaller O rings.

and this is the newly fabricated one

Crack testing around the pressure gauge take off.
After cleaning the unit in the parts washer and drying it with the air gun , the housing was sprayed with special cleaner, dried, then a UV penetrator and left for 15 minutes and then sprayed with special disclosure spray. I now need to wait until there is some UV from the sun to see if there are any cracks. Unfortunately the UV lamp I used with my disco lights in the late 60's has long since expired.

Hi Keith,

I do hope the 'O' ring gasket mod works well. John Airey is our local expert on this mod but a couple of points do spring to mind. The first is that you do really need to use Vitron 'O' rings, these stand the heat better. I think we have some if you need them. The second is that for this mod to be successful, John has found that you need to check that the block and the filter assembly are 'mating' well, by using engineer's blue. Any parts not showing good fitting need to be hand-scraped to ensure a close fit. It is common for the filter assembly to be able to 'rock' on the block faces before the gasket is fitted, probably due to over-tightening and hence distortion in the past. It must be a close and snug fit.

Also, we recommend using a stud in place of the near-side bolt. This helps to locate the aluminium gasket that supports the 'O' rings when assembling. Unfortunately,it is impossible to use two studs, due to the 'V' shape of the rear timing case cover.

All the best,

David
