Morse taper

Post by David Kemp »

Do Jowetts use a Morse Taper for their hubs? If so do British cars of the era also use morse taper?
Good memories of Bradfords.

The Jav/Jup rear hub has a taper as does the gearbox output flange and some fan bosses.

I guess many cars utilised tapers but whther tey are standard Morse I do not know. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_taper

Hi there,

Yes, the rear hubs on Javelins ( and I guess Jupiters? ) use a taper fitting. But be aware that the back axles with the hydro-mechanical brakes use a different size taper to the later fully-hydraulic braked version. These early axles are much 'weedier' and I have had the woodruff key shear on the taper with one of these axles, as well as the key slot 'fretting'. The tapers on the full-hydraulic braked axles are much larger.

Like Keith, I don't know if either of the tapers are a morse taper.

Hope this helps?

All the best,

David

Shearing of the key is likely to be because the taper was not on tight enough or there was grease on the taper. Thoroughly degrease both taper and boss before assembly, Make sure there is sufficient clearance around the washer so that the nut can tighten the taper (you may need to file out the washer or taper ridge), make sure you torque up (I use about 85 lbs ft) THEN make sure the split pin aligns, (If it does not I fit shims under washer rather than drilling a new hole.)
