Jowett Annual Weekend, Basingstoke 24-27 May 2013
Perhaps some will remember the great event we had in Basingstoke in 2005, an excellent hotel, convenient rally field and scenic run.
The 2013 event will be even better so watch out for emerging details in this topic. The R1 was there in 2005.

Where is Basingstoke?
Fifty miles to the west of London. If you are in a Jowett and want to avoid the motorways then some good scenic routes will lead you there.
Have a look at this route which catches those coming from the north and west .
This route along the South Downs is a bit long but prettier than the M20 M25 M3 for those coming from Europe.
Those flying into Luton or Heathrow are welcome to ask to be picked up (in a Jowett) and accomodated by us.

Rally form on-line!
The rally registration and booking form is now live on Jowett.net and ready to accept rally registrations and membership list changes.
I hope this makes life easier for us all in reporting to the hotel and exec and keeping up to date on contact details.
Please start by going to http://jowett.net/AnnualWeekend2013.html following the link to the http://jowett.net/Intro.php and then going to http://jowett.net/Contact.php
This appeared in last month's Jowetteer but due to problems with setting up the BACS account and a few suggestions from the many who tested the on-line form it has been delayed a week from going live.
Annual Weekend 24th May to 27th May 2013.
The organisation of next year's event in historic Basingstoke has been taken on by Keith and Amy Clements, Jack Moon and Chris and Sharon Spencer, with Julie Blow taking bookings.
It will be an action packed weekend with lots to do for all the family. Our aim is to show off the breadth of the club and get people interested in Jowetts, as well as giving you a really fun and memorable time.
By the time you read this an on-line booking form and the ability to pay via PayPal or BACS transfer should be available - please see website for details.
For those that have already booked and paid a deposit there is a change to payment procedure due to the nature of the contract agreed with the hotel. The balance needs to be paid to JCC Ltd. before 1st April 2013.
We would really like individuals and sections to think about how to get involved and promote the club with a stand, board or attraction that would get the public interested. Please contact any member of the team above if you have ideas or would like to volunteer.
The following will be put on the website and discussed on JowettTalk over the coming months and a précis will be published in the Jowetteer. As notification can take two months via the Jowetteer, could club members that have computer access please keep our non-computer members up to speed at section meetings etc. A copy can be provided on request by post to Keith Clements (see front cover) enclosing a stamped addressed envelope.
1. Booking form, cancellation policy, non-package costs
2. Links to alternative accommodation.
3. Suggested routes to avoid motorways to get to the start of the event.
4. Program of events for Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
5. Things to see and do around Basingstoke.
6. Jowett Junior Event Passport
Registration for Jowett Annual Weekend, Basingstoke, Hampshire, Friday 24th to Monday 27th May 2013
This will appear in the August Jowetteer.
A lot has been happening since picking up the job of organising next year’s annual event. Chris Spencer and Keith Clements met with the hotel and Saturday venue managers. Both are great places, but more on them later.
Firstly we needed to sort out the booking as requests came in for those not wishing to take the package for Friday evening through to Monday morning. So those wanting to only stay one or two nights can do, those wanting just to come to an evening meal or three, can do, those wanting just to come to the day events , can do. Please see the new booking form.
Secondly we needed to make it easier for people to book and pay, particularly those from overseas. So we have implemented an on-line booking system which will save you filling in all your contact details as it locates them in the membership list. It also checks your reservation so you do not have to work out what deposit you need to pay. It also gives you the opportunity to update your membership contact details should they have changed. Please note the payment details have changed from those on the forms handed out in Wales but do not worry if you have already sent in.
The On-line Services do rely on using your email address for communication so initially try to you use your one listed in the JCC membership register. If you do not, we do not reveal any membership details held on file. If you cannot any longer access the address in the list or you did not put one there, then you can still register; just use your current email address. Once registered, you will be able to book for the Basingstoke event and also access more on-line services becoming available. Just look at the panel on the right of the web page after reading http://jowett.net/Intro.php
The system will send Julie Blow, our Rally Treasurer, an email of your completed booking so you do not have to print it out and send it. We will also accept BACS payments as well as cheques so those with such a UK facility can save having to post a cheque. Those not with such a transfer facility should be able to come to an arrangement with a member. We are still working on PayPal, but International members only can still pay by VISA.
You should receive confirmation of your reservation by email immediately, and, when checked by Julie, a confirmation of received deposit. Since you have registered you can log-on to Jowett On-line services and view progress or update your Rally booking. If spam filters have captured our emails to you or you have lost them, then please log-on and view progress.. We also should have put those received by post in the system as well, so you can check to see if any snail mail communications have gone astray as well.
More next month on the event in historic Basingstoke itself, it really will be fun for everyone from 1 to 100 years old. Visit JowettTalk or http://jowett.net/AnnualWeekend2013.html

Wow!!
This is very impressive, but a bit too complicated for me. I'd rather read a flyer containing all the booking details and prices, and then send a booking form and a cheque by snail mail to Julie.
Is there a way, within JowettTalk, simply to click on a 'flyer' page and a 'booking form' page, and print them out with a click of the mouse, fill-in the latter by biro after due consideration and post it off?
Tony.

Whilst it might in some ways be easier for you short term, you are missing out on the advantages of doing it on-line- notably being able to track progress of the registration and your payment. You are also saving some cost, such as at least two stamps and envelopes and the paper, a trip to the bank to cash the cheques and all the time involved. The Rally account will also have your details if you pay by BACS which makes accounting a lot easier. You are also saving our hard working rally committee some considerable time when it comes to giving all your instructions to the hotel. By registering on-line your details are already in the database and thus do not have to be entered by someone else. For instance, if you need a special diet then that will be given to the hotel who will know who has what and deliver it to that person at their table. Your car details will also be there so they can be put quickly into the program. Allied to all this is that you can keep your membership and car details up to date and thus save the membership sec and registrars some time trying to decipher the hieroglyphics that sometimes adorn forms.
But if I have not convinced you then you will have to wait for your Jowetteer.
Registrations are now coming in on-line and within perhaps a few hours they can be confirmed. We are net yet fully automated as I have not linked the system up to the bank account! So Julie still has to check the bank account on the Internet.

Re: Jowett Annual Weekend, Basingstoke 24-27 May 2013
I completed mine online as one of the first in order to trial the system - it took less than a few mins and was very easy - the old way would have taken me half a day - firstly I would have had to find the form - and due to the fact I am carrying out major works at home - it would have been buried under a mountain of stuff that keeps getting moved from room to room - next cheque book - where the hell is that ? - it must be 12 months since I last used it !!. Given that I saved the time plus the cost of the stamp & envolope, ho, and the biro ink (carnt tha tell ha riginate fromt Yorkshire) - I did not even have to check that the cheque had arrived / cleared - I got a nice e mail from Julie our rally treasurer confirming that the money was in the rally account within 2 hours of sending it - the following day I received an e mail from Julie with a copy of the deposit receipt that showed the balance owed. (also saving an envolope, stamp, biro ink - ah and Julie's shoe leather because you also have to walk to the post box)
Now I know just how much time Keith has committed to getting the form up, running and on line and it is far from a few hours - making your booking electronic saves the rally committee a great deal of work - not just for this rally but for future rallys - it means that we can spend the time where need to spend the time 'on making the rally a fantastic event for all' and not up to our necks in just more paperwork. Please make the effort and use the system - by all means if you do not have computer access (you will not be reading this then) - then fill in the form and post it - or you are not set up on internet banking - you can still complete the form electronically and post the cheque - or better still if you have a member or should that be 'Jowett Friend' - who has computer / internet access why not get them to complete / submit it on your behalf ?
Has a club we can only get better by being better organised - hence continual improvement - which in turn from which we all benefit (can not tell that I still work in a heavly orientated commerical market either can you !)
Kind regards - Chris

Re: Jowett Annual Weekend, Basingstoke 24-27 May 2013
Well, snail mail and a cheque for the deposit elicited a receipt from Julie, so Hilary and I will be Basingstoke-bound for the Rally in late May 2013.
As it's about 250 miles from Clayton le Moors, near Accrington in Lancashire to the hotel in Basingstoke, we've decided to break the journey at The Premier Inn, Warwick Road, Warmington, Banbury, Oxfordshire, OX17 1JJ.
At the moment it's only £39 for a no-refund room, and there's a pub attached, so I've booked us in for the Thursday night (23 May)
From this Premier Inn it's about 90 miles south to the hotel in Basingstoke, so it's an easy journey on the Friday, getting us to the hotel in the early afternoon all being well.
Here's the link if anyone else would like to join us for the evening:- http://www.premierinn.com/en/checkHotel/BANWOB/banbury

Re: Jowett National Rally, Basingstoke 24-27 May 2013
Here is the latest news & details for the event:
JOWETT NATIONAL RALLY – BASINGSTOKE - 24TH – 27TH MAY 2013
Our venues have now been confirmed for the event, the hotel is the ever popular ‘Hampshire Court Hotel’ http://www.qhotels.co.uk/hotels/the-ham ... sions.aspx (same venue as Basingstoke 2005 but has seen recent & extensive refurbishment ) – the hotel offers full facilities including a pool, spa & leisure complex – we have an exciting schedule of evening events planned in order to keep you entertained whilst also allowing you all time to meet up with likeminded friends & members.
Our event theme is ‘Nine decades of Jowett’ and to suit the theme we have sourced ’The Milestones Museum’ http://www3.hants.gov.uk/milestones/ for our rally venue – two miles from the hotel this fantastic museum has all the makings of very special day for all. Being a living museum it gathers everything from our past and displays it in a period manner – everything from a steam train to tram to bicycle, Victorian public house to sweet shop (which actually trade) to ironmongers – all laid out and displayed in full size period stone cobbled streets.
We have a great rally field adjacent to the museum – and hard standing facilities as a contingency – full & modern facilities are offered upon site including a 1950’s themed restaurant. Whilst being optional we would like for as many of you as possible to appear in period costume on rally day in order to suit the theme (more about this in later Jowetteer editions)
Sunday is currently being planned but will include a scenic run with a difference and an option to return to the museum if you missed the opportunity on the rally day. Many more fun & memorable activities are planned along with few very special surprises – BUT WE CAN NOT DO IT WITHOUT YOU THERE ! – Bookings are limited and are selling quickly – in order to avoid disappointment – please do not delay your booking.
Should you require any further information you can contact me direct:

Booking Forms
For those whose dog has eaten their August Jowetteer here are the Booking Forms.
Please find attached a Word and a pdf version of the Rally Booking form which was in the August Jowetteer. You can print either off and send with cheque to Julie or you can complete electronically and send it to her by email and make a BACS transfer thus saving postage, trees and footwear.
Should you require a printed version then please send Keith Clements a Stamped Addressed Envelope. I will not charge an administration charge for this extra work, but hope that you can contribute to the event in some way and help run the club!
Much better would be to complete the form on-line and send payment by BACS (or VISA or PayPal if overseas).

Re: Jowett Annual Weekend, Basingstoke 24-27 May 2013
JOWETT ANNUAL WEEKEND 24TH MAY – 27TH MAY 2013
BASINGSTOKE, HAMPSHIRE
Many of the finer details are now being put in in place for what is planned to be a great weekend, with our theme being ‘90 years of Jowett’ we would like as many members to enter the spirit of the event by appearing in period dress on the Saturday / rally day. Do not worry you shall not be on your own – all of the rally team , museum staff and many other members will also be making the effort . Should your wardrobe not currently house the said attire – listed below are some ideas:
Try your local charity shops – you will be amazed what they come up with
E Bay – Has loads of period dress items
Vintage fairs – In case you are unaware vintage style is the new fashion – fairs are held throughout the country - try the following website – http://www.vintagefairsuk.co.uk
Larger towns & cities will have vintage fashion shops – look in the phone listings or online
There are also many websites listing vintage fashion and how to obtain the right styles but you can also try your local library which will hold reference on period fashions
The judging and awards will take place during rally day by invited local dignitaries with prizes for best period dressed children, couples, male & female with the Kier Williams Trophy going to the overall winner
(You get to wear the outfit all over again at Goodwood later in the year
– see separate article)
Evening entertainment will include a meet, great & quiz on the Friday, Concours awards & cabaret on the Saturday, Club awards & presentations on the Sunday
WANTED
We would like to secure a sponsor for the Saturday entertainment and can offer a full advertising package in return
WANTED
The Great Picture Project - Your images of members having fun – with / without cars / any event – any format – electronic /CD/ memory stick/ hard copy (all returned) see contact information below
WANTED
Your help with the event – rally marshals, hotel registration, raffle sales, general help
STILL WANTED

Evening entertainment will include a meet, great & quiz on the Friday, Concours awards & cabaret on the Saturday, Club awards & presentations on the Sunday

Re: Jowett Annual Weekend, Basingstoke 24-27 May 2013
From this Premier Inn it's about 90 miles south to the hotel in Basingstoke, so it's an easy journey on the Friday, getting us to the hotel in the early afternoon all being well.In August,I wrote:Hilary and I have decided to break the journey at The Premier Inn, Warwick Road, Warmington, Banbury, Oxfordshire, OX17 1JJ, so I've booked us in for the Thursday night (23 May 2013)
The Yorkshire contingent are 'hanging fire' at the moment due to various circumstances. But if you're coming down from the far, or not-so-far North, have a look at:-
