Has Peter's new engine a sandcast crankcase? It is very rough and nothing like others. Has anyone any details on their history?
Also do we have any history on the reconditioned engine numbering?

Re: Sand cast crankcase?
Hi Keith,
It certainly looks from the serial number of the crankcase set ( 1188 ) like a very early set. I believe these were sand cast but I have no definitive info on this. If it is a very early set, then I would be interested to know if the crankcase has been brought up to near Series 3 standard? I believe Jowett's were doing this in the time of Jowett Engineering and the number on the boss of RO 15000 N seems to show that it has been back through the factory at some time?
Modifications to lift it to near-Series 3 include drilling out the oil ways in the block and perhaps fitting a Mk. 4 oil pump? However, if it is a very early crankcase set, then the oil delivery holes to the tappets will be the larger ones for the hydraulic tappets. Using the later solid tappets will probably cause a lower-than-expected oil pressure on tick-over.
Our experience with the early crankcases seems to show that they have withstood corrosion far better than the later ones and seem less prone to cracking. They just need some 'fettling' to intoduce some of the later mods.
I have attached a photo of a later crankcase for comparision on the surface finish.
I hope this helps?
All the best,
David

Re: Sand cast crankcase?
If memory serves me right Jowett Engineering had a batch of sandcast crankcases made in the late fifties as athey had run out of reconditionalble alloy ones. Were these numbered differently and how many were made/
