Lub chart

Contains and equivalent chart which I was searching to see a match for Admax B3 that has been happily sitting in my front wheel bearings since 1990. There was slight play on one front wheel so dissassembly showed the Bentone based grease had not melted, in fact it had not even moved since being put in there. The grease close to the bearing had turned black (from the original straw).

BP-Energrease T Series
Shell- Darina Series
Mobil –Mobiltemp Series
Esso- Norva 275 Series
Caltex- Thermatex Series
Castrol- Spheerol BN Series
Pennzoil-Pennzlube Bentone Series
Petronas-Motogris HB
Total-Caloris 3
Duckhams-Admax B3

I am now purchasing sealed bearings (from simplybearings.co.uk) to replace the MS6 and LS10 FAG fitted in 1990 prior to most of my competitive era. Will these last as long?

Hi Keith

Please forgive my ignorance but I assume you use these 'fancy' (sorry!!) greases rather than Castrol Heavy or CL or LM grease as recommended by Jowett because of your competition work. Presumably for 'normal' use by us lesser mortals we could still stick to Heavy (if we can get it!) or CL or LM grease?

Thanks

Paul

Initially the reason for finding a non melting grease was because, after any competion work or hard driving, the wheels were covered in grease indicating it had all melted. Also I was getting through wheel bearings frequently (like two sets in two years). The change to this grease provided incredible reliability and clean wheels. I have some reservations because it does not move and so it does not replenish itself in the same way as a grease that flows, similar to a sealed-for-life bearing. Such grease was not available in the 50's.

It might pay to take out, clean and refit bearings rather than just pumping more grease in. That way any old or broken down grease will be replenished properly (similar to an oil change). Reading the tech sheets and development of grease shows how the technology has improved over 60 years. I have not found an answer to what 'lubricated for life' means. Is it 20 years of competition driving?

Note that I may be wrong about using such grease; but it worked for me.
