Repairing Aluminium Blocks

Post by ksf996 »

The normal way to fix has been to send the block to a specialist engineering company to get the crack aluminiun welded. The downside to this approach can be that the welding process can cause warping of the casting. I am looking to get a good set of castings repaired and wondered (a) can anyone recommend a good firm and (b) has anyone tried the (liquid metal) alternative i.e. belzona 1511 or similar and if so does it work. Many thanks for your time. DT.

Find a welder used to welding aluminium blocks and heads. Make sure he knows the aluminium type and chooses the correct filler rod. The block should be cleaned well. Normally it helps if the block is pre-heated in an oven, although modern TIG HF AC welding may make that not necessary. It can help if the block is torqued up with its matching pair during welding. Usually the block will need line boring of cam and main bearings after welding.

Unfortunately my local expert has moved on.
