7 hp back axle rebuild

Post by ian Howell »

Alastair Berney in New Zealand has a 1930 Jowett Long Four very close in number to mine. In recent correspondence he made the following comment: -

Just spent this afternoon around at Chris Tarrant's place (that is the NZ Chris Tarrant) and we disassembled the Jowett Seven diff and proceeded to insert the new axle shafts with the newly built up hubs. All should have been straight forward, but on a Jowett, no. The first axle fitted into place no trouble, but the second was a very tight fit and we could not get the clips at the diff end to sit in the groove and push back into the diff casing. We then found that these clips were of different size and by taking the first axle out and changing the clips over we were then able to put both shafts in. Why these clips are of a different size and only fit one side and not the other remains a mystery as they both fit either of the old axles. (Just to enlighten you, these clips I am talking about are more like collets as used for valves, but of a different shape). Anyway darkness took over and we had to finish for the day.

(Me again: -) Might this be because one half shaft is from a different year / model? I have not 'heard' mention of any circllips in any past correspondence on back axles, so might this not even be a Jowett axle?

Alastair would be glad of any encouragement.

Alastair and Dad were just working on the axle before. I took a few pics. I dont know how far they got on it, as they are now cutting up fire wood now and Ive been busy studying.
I will check after they finish.
