Dear Pat,

Back in the 1970s and 1980s we used, as per Mercedes-Benz instructions, soluble oil (as used in machine tools mixed with water) as the corrosion inhibitor as well as water pump gland seal lubricator.

We used Mercedes-Benz OM 352A, OM 360 and the Vee 6 (OM 402??) diesel engines in combine harvesters. These harvester engines were ultra reliable and we never suffered a cavitation errosion concern with them - even though they were operating in extremely high ambient temperatures during harvest. I think the mix was 10% soluble oil to clean rain water.

We had minus 5 degrees in western Victoria yesterday morning - cold for that area!! Nice sunny day here though.

Dear Pat,

Please note that I said I think it was 10% by volume. It is a long time now since I was involved with the M-B diesel engines. Also, we never used antifreeze in the coolant, so, I don't know how the soluble oil mixes with whatever antifreeze is used these days.

In some ways I miss the old antifreeze ritual!

In view of the recent temperatures in Melbourne, perhaps you ought to renistate the ritual!
