Just to comfirm on the very top photo...

Is the top leaf springs for the 1935/36 Cross brace chassie? They are the ones fitted to the rear arnt they?

Is the next 4 for the 1930/33 Chassie?

The last two are bradford ones to compair sizes.

Is those brackets on the springs original? What are they? Are they for Luvax shocks?

Also I got one more question.. Is the front springs for the 1935/36 Cross brace chassie the same size as earlyer 7 front leaf springs and same as bradford? Or are they different again?

Thanks you every one :)

Hello there.

At first glance Id say the middle two sets of springs right for your chassis, you also also right the mountings folded at right angles are for a shock, I think luvax( I know there used on the 34 model) not sure about earlier years, Tony Fearn would be the one who could correct me, as he has a 33 flying fox. The top set in the middle being the back with the thicker mountings for the rear shackles, at the back of the chassis through silent bloc bushes, which are available through Jowett spares. And the front of the spring which are then bolted on up front on the back of the chassis with a bolt coming out of the outside of the chassis . The bottom set of the middle are the fronts, the four holed bracket for the U shaped clamps which bolt through them and on the bottom of the spring Through to another four holes on the front axle. And then nutted up from the bottom. Will get some pics up to explain this. Hope this helps.

there looks to be a pair with grease nipples - if so they are 1931 or earlier as silent block bushes came in for 1932 model year.

It shows you how true it is on export models Jowett fitted all there old stock. That chassie im using is a 33 or 34. Cant remember what year exactly what was on the block. The springs are early ones but fitted with the Luvax shock mounts. Chasshie has Luvax mounts on it. Plus it has the rubber GBox mounts on it.
It is fitted with slient block on chassie fronts and springs. Some were so badly worn that that they had completely worn thru the steel inner of the slient block bush

Hello James.

I found my notes on what to look for regarding pre-war (1934) Jowett saloon road springs when attending autojumbles here in the UK.

Perhaps they will be of use.

I've tried to upload certain photos but don't seem to be able to do so, so here it is in prose.

Front springs:-

7 leaves, each 1/8" thick x 1.5" wide. Central peg. 30.5" between spring eye centres around the bottom of the spring. 15/16" internal spring eye diameter.

Rear springs:-

9 leaves, each 1/8" thick x 1.75" wide. Central peg. 37.5" between spring eye centres measured around bottom of spring. 1 and 1/16" spring eye diameter.

As you can see, the locating peg is central whereas on one, or other, or even both of the front and rear Bradford Springs the peg is offset.

Take care to see that the shackles aren't worn away on the inside where they might rub on the spring eye itself, and make sure the shackle bolts aren't worn.

Also, fabricate new locking tabs for both sides of each of the shackles, front and rear, so that there's no possibility of the nut/bolt unwinding. They are easy to make out of 20 gauge sheet steel.

Hope this helps.

Tony.

P.S. I don't have your email address so I cant send photos. Mine's in the membership list.
