Trip Report - Paul Finn Rally 26th June 2010

Post by Jack »

On 26th June we were signed up for the Paul Finn Rally in aid of BEN, an organisation dedicated to helping the automotive and related industries provide care and support for employees and their dependants in times of need http://www.ben.org.uk/events/lynwood-fe ... inn-rally/

We set out from Kings Langley at 9:30(ish) to head to Ascot Racecourse, where the rally was due to start. Minor issue with starting, the battery was flat on the SC, this is becoming a regular problem and probably due to the regulator. We are now rather good at chucking the booster pack on the right terminals and starting it up, but it would be nice if this wasn’t necessary! Another job for the list…

Once started, we headed round the M25, full of roadworks still, at a leisurely 50mph due to speed restrictions and with lots of people looking at the two Jupiters as they passed. Soon we were coming off the M25 and heading to Ascot, sat nav as always had us in the right direction. Unfortunately sat nav didn’t have the postcode for carpark 10, so a quick U turn and we were in the right place – waved in by the marshalls we entered the field.

Amy pulled into line with the other Jowetts, after having neatly taken out a metal stake in the ground (no damage done) and we had a drink to recover from sweltering heat. It was baking – in T-shirt and shorts, with no hood, at 50mph, it was still cooking.

With just under 200 vintage cars to get out of the field, at number 171 I think we knew we had rather a long time to hang on before we’d be leaving. A good opportunity for some to wander around looking at the other cars, to have a chat with some of their owners, and Keith even managed to change a rotor arm and get somebody going again.

The battery problem reared its ugly head again, but a quick boost and we were off again – all other Jowetts started on the button, no major mechanical issues throughout the day so another success for the marque I think!

Only one wrong turn on the scenic run, turning left at the Chinese restaurant instead of right (last minute confusion so I made a 50/50 guess, wrong!) but only a 50 yard detour to get back on the route. I had been happily following everyone else, but when we lost them at the traffic lights wasn’t really focused on the task at hand! We wanted to lose the rest of them anyhow, the SC loves a bit of attention and the other cars were distracting the general public. Plus we wanted the undivided attention of the AA man following up from the rear! John B gracefully followed us up the garden path, obviously he knew we’d taken a wrong turn but didn’t want to leave us on our own, perhaps. Or he wanted to stick with the AA man as well…

The run then went through Windsor Great Park. This isn’t something you can just go and do, the rally organizers had go special permission to let the procession through the park, and we had a nice tour around, missing a number of cyclists and pedestrians that clearly hadn’t realized the nice path they were on was now a road. We passed the polo fields, and driving past in the car it was a shame there wasn’t a game on the go – I know which way I’d be looking, we’ve clearly got more horses under the bonnet than they’ve got on the field.

A winding tour of the park, and then out of the gates to head to Lynwood, where the fete was being held. As one of the last vehicles to leave, we arrived to carparks full of cars, gardens with classic motorbikes everywhere, and we were guided towards the paddock for Jowett and a couple of other select cars. Some of the others at the rally:

With his big mouth open – not like his owners at all…

John Blankley’s car, lots of photos taken of his hood, and discussion about how we could fabricate the missing link from our hood frame! We now have a plan, hopefully not too complicated.

We parked up and spent the afternoon wandering around, eating ice-cream, and looking at a bunch of birds of prey. We also discovered the main purpose of the back shelf in the SC, picnics. With a few plates laid out and a coolbag, it makes a rather convenient table for drinks and things. I’ll have to work out some sort of picnic friendly covering for the shelf and battery box lid!

Lots of interest from both the general public and owners of other cars at the rally, we answered a few questions, popped the bonnet up, and shared the story of the rebuild with a fair few. Many people recognised the Javelin, some recognised the Jupiter, and lots were pleased to see the cars out on show.

Hopefully more good publicity for the club, and will generate some potential future Jowett owners – I am sure many others will have been out an about in their cars over the glorious weekend we’ve just had, so feel free to share your stories and brighten up a dull Monday at work for the rest of us!

And because everybody loves a fit bird to have a leer at:

A ruddy great Falcon was part of the birds of prey display team. Look at the claws on that!
