Tow Bars, Rear Ends

I'm interested in knowing if tow bars and mounts were fitted from the factory, as I've got/had some sort of mounting for one mounted to the chassis before, but was getting in the way of the luggage rack, now ive gone to assemble everything I'm just wondering whether to or not. Heres a pic of what I've got at the moment.

Hi Alan - the business of 'factory' tow bar mounting points is a recent EEC rule along with triler weight (maximum train weight) on vin plate. As far as I am aware no such points were fitted to any pre war cars for that matter 50's, 60's vehicles. Most towbars were fabricated by owners or local blacksmiths using a bit of common sense as to where to mount them. My granadfather towed a caravan behind a ' 34 Kestrel & his friend with a morriis 10 used to borrow it but the morris apparently did not tow it anything like as well as the Kestrel'

the bar was mounted below the quarter bumpers & consisted of 3 pieces of substantial angle iron. The cross member with the towball and two pieces at rightangles that were bolted inside the back chassis members. This car also towed a large trailer on an almost daily basis carrying large items of furniture for the family cabinet making business. This trailer was used to great advantage in the early post war period of petrol rationing as many family outings to Blaackpool were made using 'red' (commercial purposes only) petrol. On the trailer was a large wardrobe with documentation for its delivery to a boarding house belonging to friends in Blackpool - on the return journey the same wardrobe was accompanied by documentation covering its return to Sockport for refurbishment!

In the 60's I towed a trailer tent weighing about 6 cwt behind an '8' the towbar I made was just a steel bar 2" x 3/4" bolted accross the bumper brackets. It never gave any trouble.

When posting pictures please reduce size such that they not only fit on the page without needing to scroll and also do not take up all the disk space. There really is no need to have pictures greater than 100k unless you really need to see the detail.

I may force such restrictions if we cannot do this. I spent some hours reducing all pictures when moving the forum last month.
