Jacks

Post by kemp1942 »

Does anyone know what type/make of jack was original with '30s cars ?.

Arabella ('34) has what appears to be an original jack handle mounted across the bulkhead. It is 'T' shaped with a 1/2" squared end to operate a jack. :?:

Jack and handle

Post by Tony Fearn »

Hello Ian.

Alan Bartlett asked me this a couple of days ago with reference to his 1934 long saloon.

I photographed the jack handle and sent the photos, with dimensions to him. The jack didn't have a T bar, (1934 Short Saloon), but one end was slightly flattened with a hole drilled through it to take a 3/8" tommy bar.

I also sent a photo of Mary Ellen's original jack.

The problem is that I deleted my photos only last night thinking no-one else would need them. Doesn't it always happen!!

So P.M. Alan and I'm sure he'll forward my emails, or better still he may publish the photos here.

Tony.

Thanks Tony, and Alan - look forward to seing the photos and hopefully can pick something up on ebay or at Beaulieu next year.

Arabella has not only the jack handle across the bulkhead but also a handpump. All the clips bolted to the bulkhead look original.

One thing that has had me scratching my head is where the starting handle, and wheelbrace should be stored. I'm thinking of mounting them on the rear of the back seat with some clips. When I get a jack it will hopefully fit into one of the tool boxes on the bulkhead
Also the pair of door sidescreens - they are too deep to go down behind the rear seat back - either E J Newns didn't think this one through or they are not the original frames ! I suspect the latter - perhaps I can get them modified at some point in the future so that they 'fold'

Jack

Post by kemp1942 »

As I get older, the grey hair gets greyer and the grey cells get fewer !

Last night, after a couple of scotch's (for medicinal purposes, you understand) the few grey cells that are left working began suggesting to me that there was a jack with Arabella when I acquired her. A quick torchlight search of the shed, the coalhouse and the garage failed to turn up anything other than several hydraulic jacks.

Another search this afternoon and I tripped over a screw jack on the garage floor next to the engine I had taken out of Arabella - and it's a Vaughan Bros 1A identical to the one in your photo, Tony !

Embarrassing or what ?

Incidentally, Tony, my T bar is as you described - it has a removable 'tommy bar' which I thought was fixed but is in fact only fixed by years of paint

What sort of scotch was that? - I will have to get some

The navy have a rum issue - perhaps Jowetteers should have a whisky issue

A Rum thing

Post by Alastair Gregg »

Sad though it may be the Navy stopped the "tot" of Rum on July 31st, 1970. The general thought was potentially judgment impaired sailors firing nuclear warheads off at random was probably not the smartest thing in the world.

I have a "nip" of the hard stuff from Crieff with Jowett all over it, maybe we need to find where Drummond got it from :)

Nip of Scotch

Post by Tony Fearn »

Hello Peter.

I remember very well the method of starting the day properly when you, me and Dave Fox stood the stall at the National Autojumble at Beaulieu on behalf of the Jowett Car Club for quite a number of years.

It was an hors d'oeuvre that we all looked forward to before the bacon butties! I'm surprised that you've forgotten the name of it, so I suppose Dave bought it, but it was a very welcome single malt.

This has relevance here in this post of course because it was Ian (kemp1942) who gave us his 12 foot square frame tent to 'live in' on the 12 x 15 foot pitch we had, even though the tent was in dire need of a re-proof, which of course was carried out.

When Ian and his 'Ferroll' Spares lads came to Beaulieu they gleaned the stalls of all things Jowett for the Club's use in the future. I'll bet there's still a lot of their finds on the shelves at J.C.S. today.

Doesn't Alastair know a lot of trivia.

Glad you've found the jack Ian.

Alan - I forgot about the tyre hand pump on the bulkhead. Perhaps Ian will send you a couple of photos.

Regards, Tony.

Jacks

Post by Drummond Black »

Well Tony, I also recall "FERROL" . That was really the start of the Club's Spares scheme as we know it today. Ian Aitken Kemp & Co certainly put a lot of effort into it to made it work AND IT DID. I also remember that many, many JCC members each bunged 50 quid into the pot to keep it financed in those early days. Money well invested.

I am sure that I can suggest a few SINGLE MALTS that set you up for the day.

It will be fantastic to see your car at Wakefield, Ian, if you are planning on bringing it. I will be driving my car up from Cornwall, so there will be at least one Weasel with which to compare the differences with the Godfrey! I cannot wait!

Hi Ken.

Arabella will be there but we will be trailering her just to make sure she gets there.

She has been returned to her original upholstery and body colours so she is no longer red & black !

This was after help over her body colour from a Military Historian/maker of historical Scottish swords from Edinburgh, who had no prior knowledge of Jowett's. Work that one out !

Have a good trip to Wakefield

Body length (less handle and feet): 15"
Body length (with handle & feet): 17 1/2"
Body diameter: 1 3/8"

The flexible is modern added by me

Hope this helps
