panhard rod replacement

I am in the process of replacing the rod and I am looking for tips on methods of "levering" the rod into the slotted attachment onthe axle. I have tried a big screw driver (thanks Keith winteringam) but no success. Am I correct in placing the locking ring on inside position on the rod,this extra thickness makes it a little more difficult to locate. Any tips please.
