Torsion bars

In another thread, Ted mentioned using a torsion bar for 'leverage purposes'.
This reminded me of having read in The Manual a paragraph warning that torsion bars should be handled with great care, and even scratching should be avoided. I thought this to be a bit 'over the top'. I know a bit about surface marks being the source of local and progressive stress cracking on very highly stressed components, but is this really so for one of our torsion bars? And do we have to treat them with kid gloves?
