Replacing, speedo cable on my 8HP. Help and advice needed!
Yesterday whilst going to a local steam rally my speedometer stopped working on my 8hp.
I have disconnected the cable from the back of the speedo, and with the car moving, the cable doesn't appear to be turning.
I haven't had the time to take out the floor and check that the cable hasn't simply come loose from the gear box or is broken. I will check this during the week.
If it is broken then where can I get a replacement cable from? I don't require the armoured outer casing, just the inner cable.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

This must be an epidemic. On Sunday on the way to a local show the same fate befell the cable on my CB Bradford.
I have been advised that Speedograph and Speedy Cables can help. Also Lancashire Vintage Spares at Morecambe may be able to help. JCS do not have any but I am lobbying for them to get some made for stock.

Hi Paul,
The cable has snapped, and it would appear to have been on it's way for some considerable time. This I think would be the reason why my spedo has not been reading the correct speed, and also could be the reason why the odometer hasn't run for a good number of years.
I've spoken with both Tim Brown and Peter Rodgers, and they both recommend I buy a replacement cable, for a Bradford van. I have bought the Van speedo cable from Speedograph.
Thanks again for the web link.

It's a shame that I didn't know this before!
The only cable supplied by Speedograph and recommended by Tim and Peter was one for a Bradford Van 1945/1953.
This was ordered last night.
Had I known about the different cables for CC and CB Bradford, then I would have waited until I could speak with somebody at JCS and bought a CB cable from them.
When the cable arrives, probably tomorrow. I'll know if it's the correct one or not, and if it's not, then I will have to mail it back to them and see if I can get a refund.
Life can be very trying at times

Sorry Paul, I am confusing you.
I hope that the one that they list for the Bradford is the right one for you.
Further down their list there is a word that seems to be an amalgam of Jupiter and Bradford. I suspect that this is the later cable.
JCS have the later one. WHat we both need is an earlier one. I too have had a chat with Speedograph and pointed out that their listing is wrong and have ordered the correct one. it has to be made to order.
I have asked for a quote for 6 for JCS too, though if it is the originals that we have had fail, I dont reckon either of us will need another!!

Hi Paul,
I've just been speaking with Tim at Speedograph (16:25) and he's informed me, that the one they are sending me, will be the correct cable for my 8. The one which I have ordered has a "KEY" fitting for the gear box, and a "Square" fitting for the speedo, as described by Tim. This is exactly what mine looks like.
It should arrive tomorrow which is good. I have the day off, so I can fit it and see whether or not it works.
Please, don't worry about confusing me. I do it all the time

Speedo Cable for 8
I , also, use Speedograph for my cables and find the quality to be very good and the items to be correct. A few days before I left for Bideford I spoke with Tim and requested a speedo cable for the Jupiter but 12 inches longer than standard due to having the overdrive. It arrived within two days. Cannot beat service like that.

My new replacement cable arrive in Friday's post. So yesterday I attached the cable.
Then both my self and Dad, spent the rest of the day, and this morning, re locating and securing the Floor and Gear Box cover. What a pig that was. Why nothing goes back the way it was before, I will never know.
In the end we now have everything back together. The floor still isn't right, but It will have to do, and we are both very happy with it.
I took the car for a test run, and the Speedo works. The only problem now is the odometer is stuck and doesn't turn.
Can any body recommend a good Instrument restorer?
