Radiator mounting question for 1935 Flying Fox

A member here is working on a Flying Fox about 1935..
Its missing some parts... Question is what does the bottom of the Radiator bolt to on the chassie?
Does any one have pics of it?
also im not sure? but they may also want to know where the bottom of the grill attaches too?
I beleave they want to restore it as close to a original flying fox.

Hello Bradford man.

Tonight I had a look at a friend's 1935 saloon.

The forwardmost 'girder' of the front cross brace has two holes drilled into the top flange equidistant from the starting handle steady tube.

One of these can be seen clearly in your first photo next to the edge of the wing on the LHS.

If you are using the original Jowett radiator, then the holes in the supporting flanges at the bottom of each side of the rad should correspond to the holes in the cross brace. Some people use a rubber washer between the flanges and the cross tube to help reduce vibration.

The flanges point to the rear of the rad. as do the outlet pipes and the header tank.

The rear face of the radiator is vertical. The stainless steel cowl (surround) is at an angle and is attached to the sides of the radiator by thin sheet metal plates soldered to the surround and the sides of the rad on the car I inspected.

There may be other ways of fitting the cowl.

The false honeycomb will need to be attached to the cowl first.

The photos on B's new mobile phone are not of much use as there was no flash and the building was very dark.

Perhaps another 1935 owner who also uses this website might be prevailed on to photo his/her radiator set-up. Come on lads and lasses, New Zealand isn't awash with Jowett experts.

Well I am James. I set this profile up for Dad and I.
The reason I used The Bradford man was because dad over the years have owned so many bradfords and rebuilt them etc.
He even owned all 4 different versons of bradfords at once. CA, CB, CC and CD. we used to be called bradford city
Dad has also ownered numurus Jowetts over the years.
All from Jowett 7s, 8s, 10s, Bradfords, Javlins. He hasnt had a Jupiter tho.
So Hes got a good knolegde base on alot of Jowett stuff which comes in very handy.

As far as i know of theres only 2 of the 1935 Jowett 7hps in NZ.
So we kinder working with something a lil different
1 is Martins Flying Fox thats has had aload of work done to it so far.
The other is my Jowett 7hp project. will be building into a Weasel
Ive only Just started on it.

See the following photos of a 35 radiator. It's a bit damaged in places but I'm sure you will relise how it should be. Not the feet stick forward on the 35 and are shorter. The 34 the feet face backwards and they are longer. Also the starting handle hole in the 35 is at the bottom as the attached photos. In the 34 the starting handle hole is a little higher up

Hello again James.

Rather an interesting development regarding the mounting brackets on the radiator.

I note that you've found the original brackets. Can you see which way round they should be on the radiator? Sometimes the soldered area on the sides of the rad will help.

Peter's photo number three seems to have appendages attached to the mounting brackets which perhaps are not original fittings.

May be the best way to resolve the issue is to make sure that the rear face of the radiator core clears the carburettor and choke arrangement attached to the manifold when the latter is in-situ on the engine.

If the brackets are forward, then the radiator will of necessity be moved rearwards and the distance between its rear face and the bolt head holding the choke onto the carburettor will be reduced.

From your original photos it looks as if you have the bonnet. If you have the original radiator stay rods, these and the bonnet will also help to detemine the position of the radiator.

I think every thing for the raditor stuff has been sorted for Martins Flying Fox.
At The moment they are working on the raditor. Its having drip gutters made for around the dicky seat. I will Add pics to my Gallery if any one wants to check it out.
While my one will be different story. I only got top and bottom tanks and bottom raditor mounts.
I think I may have to get a 1935/36 raditor grill from some where....
If any one knows about one I could be intrested?
Im in No Rush tho.
Im only stripping down the chassie at the moment.
