Just an observation regarding the concours points system - I have felt for some time that the sections should be better 'weighted'; perhaps we ought to be sourcing how national concours judges use their own organisations points scoring. For example, how can a tool kit score the same points as the paintwork on a well restored car knowing the skill and preparation needed to achieve a 'concours' finish?

Keep the comments coming. Everyone has views. If the owner did the paintwork themselves then it should be highly scored compared to a professional job. An original toolkit is actually more difficult to have than a good paint job.

Perhaps not the topic for it but, where does it stop? You can have an original car which has been looked after un molested or majorly changed, or you can have a practically new car, where the only thing original is the registration? Which I know certainly with the MGs you can buy pretty much every part out of a catalogue and bring it up to a concours standard for a fair sum. But I guess to a degree a concours is mainly about high standards Id imagine...not really looked much into it. Even so depending on the age of the how high were the standards back then? Due to materials available back then and now.

Getting the period look. Car details. Ale.

Post by Forumadmin »

It is time to start thinking about your period look for the 25th May!
Ladies have a look at this
or blokes at this

If you have not already done so please send the details of the Jowett you will be bringing to Tom Chapman or Chris Spencer or Keith Clements. If it is not with us this week it will not be in the program.
We need the model, year of manufacture and registration number of the vehicle.

I have had some positive feedback on getting some local ale from Andwells for our imbibing at the event. Please can you let me know by email which you would prefer from Resolute Bitter, Gold Muddler, King John or Ruddy Darter. Tasting notes are here http://www.andwells.com/beers . We will also be getting a selection of bottles in so, if you have any preference, let me know.

Last time we were down at Basingstoke, a number of members were seen to be going up and down the dual carriage in the wrong direction as they were trying to locate the hotel on the first day.

The approach is rather confusung, if I remember correctly.

Chris:- I'm coming from the west via A339 then A33. Can you give details of the way to the hotel from the Binfields roundabout please. Are there two ways of approaching the hotel, I've forgotten?

In the past, and occasionally, directions very close to Rally venues were picked out by small fluorescent marker pennants attached to small stakes with JCC on them pointing the way. Is this possible?

Tony.

Hi Tony,

We can certainly try to assist, we have markers that could be used if we can find an appropriate place to put them at the required junctions - it all depends if we can get to the right spot so that they are visible from a roundabout etc.

Google is very good for directions on this http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=hampshi ... a=N&tab=wl hopefully with postcode RG24 8FY you won't go far wrong, but I'm sure the team that know the hotel better can advise a "best route".

Regards,

Jack.

Having driven the route yesterday to check, this is a navigator's view.

Roundabouts, slip roads and multi-laned junctions abound in Basingstoke so it is not as simple as rights and lefts!

The first thing to get in your head is that Basingstoke is circled by a ring road.
The next thing,, if you have any sense of spatial awareness and a sense of direction, is that the hotel is in the North East corner of this big ring road.
The third thing is that the hotel is on the A33 going North East towards Reading, so look out for those signs and this will help your lane discipline at the roundabouts and junctions. (This is particularly true when going around the ring road from the M3 where two left filters appear in quick succession, take the second signposted A33 Reading)
Once on the A33 after leaving the ring road, you should go through a set of traffic lights on the dual carriageway and then onto a roundabout where you continue right or third exit on the A33.

The next roundabout, BINFIELDS, is the important one as you must take the fourth exit where you hopefully are directed by the Hampshire Court hotel sign. The third exit takes you to Tescos!

You continue straight along this road (although it does do a long left hand sweep), through a set of traffic lights and a roundabout (1st exit) , then take the third left into the hotel. I will guarantee you will not miss the hotel entrance as there will be a big Jowett Banner.

Going to Milestones also needs all the above skills of lane discipline but this time think you are aiming for the West side of the ring road. From the hotel find your way back to the ring road and aim to go west not south along it (this is the fifth exit on the roundabout over the ring road, so keep counting). Follow signs to Leisure Centre which will be before the next roundabout (make sure you get in the left lane).
a340.png
You are now travelling south and at the next roundabout you will take the third exit and see a giant Jowett banner and the rally field (but you are not there yet!). At the next roundabout you are doubling back on yourself. Do not exit into the leisure centre but follow the sign to Milestones which is left just as you rejoin the dual carriageway. Hopefully you will now smell the Jowetts and follow your way right, left, U turn and left into the rally field.

It is also worth knowing that the city is bisected east to west by Churchill Way on which Milestones is situated but outside the ring road. There are some road works on this road in the centre of the town and some signs to the Leisure Centre (or your sat-nav) may take you along Churchill Way. Worth avoiding.

And for when you have lost the bit of paper with all that written on, forgotten which way to turn, haven't got a sat nav and when you have - you have nowhere in your Jowett to charge it and it's fallen off the windscreen anyway and is now somewhere under the seat where you cant reach it Ahh !!! :? - and there's nobody else in a Jowett in front of you to follow and if there is they are lost too :x - Just simply follow the JCC arrows that I printed up today - I will ensure that they are erected on the junctions leading up to the hotel from the A33 :D Simples !

Thanks Chris.

Just returned from my Tuesday night at The Forts Arms with 'the boys' and read Keith's post first, so I was going to read it again in the morning as it was a bit complicated, and I didn't know if he was answering my specific query.

He say:- 'Roundabouts, slip roads and multi-laned junctions abound in Basingstoke so it is not as simple as rights and lefts'!

Then I read your post

Quod erat demonstrandum!

We are doing as much as we can to mitigate risks! Please follow the suggestion that you have a picture of where you are going in your head. There are some junctions where you will get into trouble if you do the usual in a slow car of staying in the left lane as you will be forced off the direction you want to go in.

You may miss a Jowett arrow hidden behind a bus or some kind kid will turn it around! This happened sometimes on rallies, particularly in Wales.

Jack did suggest a route that did not go on the ring road but I tried it and it was blighted by a dozen traffic lights and mini roundabouts.

Below is the roundabout over the ring road which you will be on if you have come from the M3 or when you are going to milestones from the hotel. If coming from the hotel then you are looking at the third exit and you will be taking the fifth which is the Ring road, A339 . Note that if you were coming from the M3 you need to get in one of the two right hand lanes to get to the hotel. Click on the picture for a more detailed view.
