1936 Jowett in Germany restore
Re: 1936 Jowett in Germany restore
Interesting idea - is this something that JCS could explore in future? We all need Whit tools, perhaps a trade account with Laser or Silverline could save members a bit of money and put profit in the hands of the club, and I am sure their "seal of approval" would be enough for most members to make sure they were getting a good product.
They could even sell some of the specialist sockets that make life easier doing particular jobs like the spark plugs on a Javelin etc.
Jack.

Re: 1936 Jowett in Germany restore
A list of tools needed for each model would be a start. Some tools are needed, others are just nice to have and make the job easier.
Tools needed for each repair operation would also be good. Have you a spanner for the cranshaft pulley boss for instance? It is not in the usual set.
I do not think JCS have the capacity to hold tools, except those special Jowett tools which they do hold for hire. Things like hub and bearing pullers would be good though. The profit margins and turnover would be very small and not justify the effort on an alreay hard pressed outfit.
But if you want to volunteer......

Hello Jack,
you are right, I want the 6 point sockets (the second picture) and spanners, I need, too.
I have looked at `ebay.uk`, but I haven´t found any good tools for me.
If you canhelp me to provide spanners and sockets for me, which I need for my Jowett, I would thank you. 3/8 drive is good for me
If you have time for me, comprehendible.
In pictures what I want:

Hello Marcel,
The fender holder (or mudguard stay) looks to be rotten only on the vertical part. The attached pressings for the sidelight, headlamp and cross-piece stay, and the upper bent part seem to be good metal (from the photo you posted).
Perhaps you could make a channel section out of the sheet metal you are using for the chassis.
If you bend it to fit tightly inside the damaged channel, and spot-welded or MIG-welded it to the original, you will have a useful article. Make sure all the paint is removed and the original metal properly wire-brushed before you attempt the spot-weld.
The repair will not be too obvious when its painted and you have the wheel and tyre on the axle.
Let us know what you think.
Tony.

Everything you need should be here: http://www.baconsdozen.co.uk/tools/whitworth.htm - just look for the "Set of seven, six sided standard depth whitworth and BSF sockets" - these are available including post to EU for £30.70, he has a "Buy Now" button that will take paypal. There is a set of eight listed below it for £4 more, but no "Buy Now" button so you may need to phone. These are both 3/8" drive, but 6 sided and good quality (Koken) sockets.
For the spanners, suggest either the Silverline or Laser combination spanners, £17 for Silverline, £22.25 for the Laser (worth the extra having seen and used both sets)
If you'd like me to deal with the whole thing, PM me through the forum with your address for postage and you can send me a paypal payment. I will deal with the seller and pay them for you, might be easier as the options above without online buttons to press will require a phone call.
Alternatively if you want to just trust us, I can probably send the tools with Peter on Sunday to save you postage costs - I understand shipping from him in Switzerland to Germany will be significantly cheaper than direct from the UK.
If you want the sockets from Baconsdozen (I would reccomend these) you need to contact me as early as possible today or they will not arrive before the weekend to go with Peter. The spanners I can get from any of 5 or 6 suppliers at the show on Friday.
Jack.

Re: 1936 Jowett in Germany restore
hello Tony,
you are right, on the photo the rest seem to be good metal, but in real it isn`t so. still more perforation corrosions, and the material on the all round the mudguard stay is very thin, because the rost was to bad. Also that thing was several times welded, and it is general bent.
You see it, if you boost the pictures.
Here an other photo: What are the odds that I can get a good mudguard stay (only left side)?
Yes, thats right, bevore I spot-weld, the frame and other things will be sandblasted.
Marcel.

Do you mean, if the Jowett is ready, you don´t see the repair? The repair will not be too obvious when its painted and you have the wheel and tyre on the axle.

Marcel - Very nice work to the chassis - it's looking very good - Ian Priestly would be the best point of contact for the bracket that you require - did you manage to obtain the replacement road spring and engine mountings ?

Hello Marcel.
That looks very 'rust-worm-eaten'.
I've attached a scan. What does your good off-side (right) bracket measure from end to floor as in the picture if held vertical? Tony.
P.S. 17 inches is about 432 mm.

O.K.Marcel.
I think that Google Translate is a good way to translate English to German, and perhaps German to English.
It translates the sentence above into your language as follows, but I don't know how good it reads to you!
Ich denke, dass Google Translate ein guter Weg, um zu übersetzen Englischen ins Deutsche, und vielleicht Deutschen ins Englische.

We know what you need, and can get them for you. The spanners and sockets you want are no problem if 3/8" drive is ok.
If you PM me with your phone number, we can chat via Peter in German when I see him on Friday.
Jack.
