Has any one done a floor change for a Javlin Gearbox?
And if so how did they do it?
Dad was saying he saw that there was a factory option to have floor change on Jup.
Thanks

Why would you? The column change is great and you can get three people in the front seat!
There was never a floor change option for the Jup unless you consider the R4 where it was standard.
People have done conversions and have fitted non-Jowett boxes but I do not think they ever thought of them as better than the standard, just engineering challenges. A different box should be stronger and you might get 5 forward gears, so it may be worth the effort. It might also be a quick way of getting rid of a box that jumps out of gear.

Re: Has any one done a floor change for a Javlin Gearbox?
I remember a write up many years ago in either jowetteer or maybe New Zealand flat four of a floor change adaptation for a javelin box which was being used to convert a CC Bradford to 4 speed in New Zealand. As I remember it was quite neatly done with no internal gearbox mods.It was claimed to work well. Presumably the mainshaft spline of jav & cc bradford are the same and I think the adapter was maade by cutting othe front & bellhousing off a cc box & machining it to fit onto jav 4 speed box.
has anybody got a copy of this article or more knowledge of the conversion

Hi George,
This came up recently in regard to a Jupiter. Same engine, not sure of what other challenges there might be to doing this with the chassis and bodywork being different.

Hope this helps.
Jack.

Re: Has any one done a floor change for a Javlin Gearbox?
I have just started to change my Abbott bodied Jupiter to 5 speed to get an overdrive,
The ford box I have chosen is the J type and has the same ratios (within 2 decimal places) as the Jowett box but the 5th gear is 0.8 to 1 so it is a good overdrive ratio.
So far I have fitted the box to the Jowett bell housing using an eighth inch aluminuim adaptor plate so I will need to use a Ford clutchplate to match the splines but I will be able to retain the Jowett clutch rod. I had about a quarter inch to mill off the end of the gearbox splines
The next big problem is the output shaft on the ford box is tri lobed but the Jowett one is bi lobed so I need to think of something constructive in welding but not yet . The next big hurdle will be shortening the front propshaft and re balancing it.I will also need to consider how to make some gearbox mountings and how to fit them.
Fotunately I had flanged every crossmember so this job is quite easy with lots of room as its on a four poster lift and the crossmembers come out with 8 quarter BSF nuts and bolts.
Watch this space to see how we cope with the (yet to come )snags

Tom, Please takes loads of pictures, make drawings and a DVD so we can copy this useful mod.
Most of what you are doing I also had to do in fitting the overdrive in place of the rear propshaft.
If this works it, may keep some more cars on the road as we must be running short of boxes now.
The purists will no doubt poor scorn on the solution.
