Floor remote gearchange

I just wondered if anybody has adapted the gearchange to remote floor change rather than a column one

I saw a photo of a Jupiter with a gearstick in the floor the other day. It's a red car, from memory red carpet, and I think it was a photo from Australia or somewhere enviously hot. Someone may know it - interesting that the tunnel for the prop shaft was much more pronounced than normal, not the usual flat floor with a bit of a bump at the front. Might be a replacement gearbox/shaft, but I didn't think much about it.

By remote change I take it you mean a gearstick in the floor which is mechanically connected to the gear change mechanism?

Out of interest, are you the gentleman who was at the NEC and asked about this? I remember Malcolm asking us about it and us pointing someone to the website to ask the question.

Closest I've found so far is an R4, pictured below - the R4 may have had this as standard, but I don't know enough about them to be able to tell you with any certainty, someone will be along to confirm.



I also don't know what gearbox was in the R4, if the same Jupiter one then it may have either been standard or modified as above. There's not many R4s, so we will know who owns this one, reg no SWT 356.

This wasn't, however, the photo I saw recently of a Jupiter with the shift on the floor, so I'll keep working on that.

If it was an Ausralian car, then I think that it would be Brian Holme's car which I was told has a five speed Ford gearbox.

Jack's picture shows my R.4, but I am afraid it is no help as the gearbox is completely different externally from the standard Jupiter one. If someone comes up with any details, how about letting me know, so I can publish it in BY JUPITER,

Hi all.

Regarding a design for a remote gear change lever.

Neil Moore designed and built a remote for a CD Bradford which was, at that time, owned by the legendary Malcolm Bergin (responsible for the line drawing in the previous post, and many other examples of fine Jowett artwork*). I owned that CD at one stage and found the remote worked quite well, but I removed it and re-installed the column change, in the name of originality . Neil may be able to help with sketches of what he did and the parts used . . . although it was a long time ago! Mind you, the gearbox on a CD is quite different from a SA and SC Jupiter (see CD gearbox/engine differences images at https://jowettnet/forum/download/file.p ... &mode=view

The white Jupiter in South Africa (late SC) has a Ford Anglia gearbox so presumably a floor change. And a very nice conversion I have seen is in the saloon Jupiter that Roger Gambell had, now owned by John Surtees. It is a right-hand floor-mounted gear change lever, and the bench seat has just a bit nibbled out of it to accommodate the lever.

Regarding the R4 Jupiter and its floor change, we must remember the Javelin's gearbox was originally in a 1940 Jowett with floor change, so it was not hard for Jowett to give the R4 a floor change. It has a unique-to-the-R4 casing but the innards are standard Javelin/Jupiter mechanicals of the period. I know that SWT has had a heck of a lot of problems with its gear change over the years.
